Steve Palmer's French Open preview

Billy Horschel looks set to start the French Open as favourite as the American seeks to follow-up on his BMW PGA Championship glory of last month. Having finished runner-up in the Open in July, the Floridian's European adventures have been hugely productive this year.

Horschel, who finished 20th on his French Open debut last year, deserves great respect on his return. Bookmakers, though, are giving nothing away with a best price of 12-1, so better value alternatives may lie elsewhere.

Steve Palmer's top tip

Yannik Paul 45-1

German Yannik Paul appears to be rediscovering his A-game and could be peaking for the French Open. Paul's last three tournaments have resulted in 18th place in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, an improvement in every round of the Spanish Open for 24th place, then 19th spot in the Dunhill Links Championship on Sunday.

Paul's front-nine scoring at St Andrews last week was sensational – he was 12 under par for his 18 holes on the Old Course's front – and he has arrived at a tournament he relishes this week.

Paul finished eighth on this Le Golf National debut two years ago, then sixth last year. His typically magnificent iron-play is shown to great effect in the French Open, where so many others dump approach shots into the water.

Putting has been Paul's traditional bugbear but he was in superb nick on the greens at the Dunhill, particularly on Sunday, signing off with a birdie putt from 25 feet. The 30-year-old looks well equipped to threaten a second DP World Tour title on Sunday.

Next best bet

Victor Perez 25-1

A star of the Olympics in August was Victor Perez, who dazzled the galleries by almost winning a medal at Le Golf National for France. There were two Frenchmen in that field and they performed in contrasting fashion. The occasion was all too much for Matthieu Pavon, who finished last, but Perez fed off the enthusiastic crowd support and finished fourth.

The three players who beat Perez in the Olympics are absent this week and the 32-year-old is clearly sensing a golden opportunity. The fact he skipped the Dunhill Links last week shows how seriously Perez is taking the French Open. He is a former Dunhill winner who is based in Dundee, but keeping fresh for France was the priority.

Perez was third in the Puerto Rico Open in March, third again in the Canadian Open in June, then 12th in the Memorial and tenth in the Scottish Open. This three-time DP World Tour champion deserves great respect for this home gig.

Other selections

Frederic Lacroix 60-1
Bernd Wiesberger 40-1

Another Frenchman who can enter the equation is Frederic Lacroix, who won his maiden DP World Tour title at the age of 29 in August – a four-shot romp in the Danish Golf Championship. Lacroix, a three-time winner on the Alps Tour in 2019, was born in Paris and still lives there, so he has a deep course knowledge to draw upon.

Lacroix's victory in Denmark had been coming. He was third in Ras al Khaimah in January, fourth in Bahrain in February and third in Prague in August. This is a brilliant ball-striker who appears at the peak of his powers.

Bernd Wiesberger is another ball-striking colossus who is well suited to Le Golf National. The Austrian won the French Open by three shots there in 2015, going on to become an eight-time DPWT champion.

Both of Wiesberger's Challenge Tour triumphs came in France and he has finished in the top 30 in each of his last four French Open appearances. Fresh from skipping the Spanish Open and the Dunhill Links, Wiesberger should return to action with a bang.

  • Course type Parkland
  • Course overview Le Golf National is one of Europe's finest courses and it usually provides a stern test. The event used to be contested in the first week of July, but switched to autumn in 2019. The 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled due to Covid. The course first hosted the French Open in 1991. It has been the venue since 2002. It staged the Ryder Cup in 2018 and the Olympics in August. The fairways are severely undulating, so precise tee-shots are required to keep balls on the cut and prepared. The rough is typically lush and penal, and several water hazards are lurking to punish the errant. The greens are large and pacy, with plenty of sharp slopes. Five of the last 11 champions topped the final leaderboard with a single-digit-under-par total
  • Story of last year Ryo Hisatsune claimed a maiden DP World Tour title, closing with bogey-free back-nine of 30 to win by two shots
  • Weather forecast Rain should soften the course prior to a windy first day. A calm but cold Friday should be followed by a clear, cool, calm weekend
  • Type of player suited to the challenge Le Golf National is a tough track, demanding accuracy from tee to green, as the penalty for wide shots is often a watery grave. Support straight hitters
  • Key attribute Accuracy
