Allianz Football League predictions

Donegal vs Dublin predictions

TG4, 7.30pm Saturday

Dublin have the advantage here. They have a competitive game with the new rules under their belt and won it, too, having come back from a two-point half-time deficit to thwart Mayo. Donegal's opener with Kerry, meanwhile, was called off.

That said, with Jim McGuinness at the helm Donegal are sure to be innovators when it comes to the reinvented game of Gaelic football.

Goals will surely be on the menu. There were six in the three Division 1 games played last weekend and Armagh were the only side not to find the net.

Donegal have scored six goals in their last five league meetings with Dublin and expect them to carve open a Dubs defence which looked dodgy at times against Mayo last weekend.

Down vs Cork predictions

1pm Sunday

Don't be fooled into thinking Down were outclassed last weekend. After 50 minutes of their encounter away to Roscommon, Down had already scored 1-18 and led by six points.

They flagged late against the wind, but showed enough in the opening hour to suggest they will be a real force in Division 2 this year. Pat Havern scored 11 points, including three two-pointers, and his outstanding long-range kicking is going to be a huge asset under the new rules.

Cork claimed maximum points in their opening outing but benefited from Meath's wastefulness in front of goal.

Far too much has been read into that final scoreline by the layers and Down should arguably be odds-on favourites.

Meath vs Cavan predictions

2pm Sunday

New Meath boss Robbie Brennan would have left Cork with mixed emotions last weekend. They scored 0-21, but conceded 2-19. The stats from that game made for very interesting reading, though.

Cork had 24 shots at goal and scored 19 of them – a staggering 79 per cent. Meath had 40 shots at goal and only scored 20 of them – 50 per cent. They scored only 14 of their 33 shots from open play, too.

If the Royals can be more clinical up front, they can take care of Cavan.

Jordan Morris was unmarkable in the opening half against Cork, while Matthew Costello continued his fine form from 2024. That pair have the potential to pose real problems for the visitors and Meath look a good bet to get their first points of the campaign.

Mayo vs Galway predictions

TG4, 2.30pm Sunday

Arch Connacht rivals Mayo and Galway serve up the highlight of the weekend and Mayo must be value at 6-4 on home soil.

They put themselves in a really good position against Dublin, only for a poor second half performance to undo all their good work. But there were still enough positives to be dissected from the display to think they can be challenging for a top-two spot.

Don't forget, Mayo had eight points to spare – 2-12 to 0-10 – when the two sides met in last year's league campaign and just a point separated the sides in last year's Connacht final, too.
