Match preview

Bolton Wanderers secured a major victory off the field last week as they avoided a 15-point penalty and a transfer embargo after reaching an agreement with the club’s unpaid creditors. Now Ian Evatt’s side can continue the feelgood atmosphere around the club when they take on Burton Albion.

After a pair of 3-3 draws to open their campaign, results have settled down for promoted Wanderers. They have conceded just twice in three games since their end-to-end start to the season and secured good victories against Lincoln and Oxford.

Evatt will have been disappointed with their 1-0 defeat at Cambridge in the last league game, but they won the shot count 13-6 and had 74 per cent of the ball.

Bolton recruited smartly in the summer and on-loan winger Oladapo Afolayan and Wales midfielder Josh Sheehan have particularly impressed, although the latter misses this game on international duty.

They face a Burton side who have continued in a rich vein of form under Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink which saw them play their way out of trouble last season after his appointment in January.

Wins over Sunderland and Ipswich have been the highlights for Burton this season, but they have lost both cup ties this campaign, perhaps hinting at a lack of depth in the squad.

Looking to address that, the Brewers were busy on deadline day, making four signings including the major coup of Sheffield United striker Daniel Jebbison on loan.

However the 18-year-old is on international duty while fellow newbie Sam Hughes will also miss out, and Hasselbaink has substantial injury concerns throughout his squad.

Michael Mancienne, Jacob Maddox and Deji Oshilaja are all unavailable and forward Kane Hemmings will presumably be eased back into action as he returns from injury.

Bolton are well placed to take advantage of the disruption to their opponents’ squad with their home support out in full force.

Despite the number of well supported teams in League One this season, Bolton’s 15,580 average attendance this season ranks fourth in the division.

As the turmoil those fans have endured off the field looks to be coming to a close, Evatt’s side can give them something to cheer on it.

Key stat

Bolton have scored the second-most goals in League One this season, with nine.
