Match preview

France showed the impact wholesale changes can have on a team when losing their dead-rubber to Tunisia on Wednesday night, and Brazil’s position in Group G means tactical tweaks are also expected for their closing clash with Cameroon.

The Samba Stars have strengthened their position as tournament favourites with comfortable wins over Serbia and Switzerland. They now turn their attention to Cameroon, who must win to give themselves any chance of joining Brazil in the last 16.

Some Richarlison magic inspired Brazil to an impressive 2-0 victory over Serbia in their first outing and, although they were less convincing against Switzerland last time, they were still able to carve out victory thanks to Casemiro’s stunning late strike.

The most impressive aspect of those wins is that neither Serbia nor the Swiss were able to muster a single shot on target.

Those wins have taken Brazil’s unbeaten run to 17 games and they have won ten times to nil in that run.

Brazil boss Tite will likely use the full depth of his squad against Cameroon, although that will be of limited solace for the Indomitable Lions given that even an entire second-string Brazil 11 would consist largely of domestic title winners and Champions League representatives.

Whoever Tite deploys his team is going to be brimming with quality and he will be keen to avoid any further niggling injuries, such as the one picked up by Neymar against Serbia.

Some reports suggest that the Brazil boss is planning to change his entire starting 11 on Friday which should offer a glimmer of hope to Cameroon, who showed plenty of character in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Serbia last time out.

In one of the tournament’s most enjoyable games, Cameroon battled back from 3-1 down to snatch a point in a fixture that highlighted both their attacking quality and defensive flaws.

In Bayern’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Lyon’s Karl Toko Ekambi, Brentford livewire Bryan Mbeumo and one-time Porto man Vincent Aboubakar, the Indomitable Lions have the forward power to cause Brazil a few problems.

The concern is that their defence is much weaker and neither Switzerland nor Serba had problems racking up the chances against them - the Swiss registered an expected-goals figure of 1.93 and Serbia 2.30.

That statistic could be even higher against Brazil, especially as Cameroon could leave themselves open to the Samba Stars’ speedsters on the break as they hunt the win they require.

A first-half goal could see Friday's contest spark into life so going long on goals could be the best approach given the uncertainty over Brazil's starting line-up.
