Wednesday Women's Champions League football predictions

Chelsea are 12 points ahead of Manchester City in the Women's Super League, but there could be little to separate them when they meet in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Joie Stadium in Manchester.

Sonia Bompastor's side are in a commanding domestic position and have yet to lose this season but there have been a few signs of potential complacency in their recent outings and that could help Nick Cushing's Citizens to take a share of the spoils in their opening clash.

The pair will probably be sick of the sight of each other having faced off in Saturday's League Cup final and they will go into battle again on Sunday in the WSL.

Last weekend's meeting on a criticised Pride Park pitch ended 2-1 to Chelsea, who benefited from a Yui Hasegawa own goal, and this game could be equally tight even though City have allowed their title quest to slide following defeats to Everton, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Chelsea have been boosted by Lauren James's return after a calf injury kept her out for three months and she had turned up with some crucial goals, netting a late winner against the Toffees, an equaliser that earned a 2-2 draw against Brighton and the crucial strike in a 1-0 FA Cup win over Crystal Palace.

The Blues did not convince in some of those performances and also scraped a 1-0 win at Aston Villa, so City, who beat holders Barcelona 2-0 in their opening group game, can head to the second leg on level terms.

Barcelona take part in the evening's other tie at Frauen Bundesliga Wolfsburg in a repeat of the final from two years ago.

Wolfsburg are not quite the force they were then – Barcelona signed their star striker Ewa Pajor over the summer – and edged into the knockout phase by virtue of a superior head-to-head record against Roma.

They lost three of their six matches and despite having won their last six home games, they may not register against their La Liga Femenina visitors, who have won their last 15 away games, keeping ten clean sheets along the way.
