Wolves vs Newcastle predictions

Wolves suffered a chastening 6-2 defeat to Chelsea in their first home Premier League outing of the season and another disheartening afternoon could be in store for Wanderers upon their return to Molineux on Sunday.

Gary O'Neil's men went into the international break with just one point from their first three matches, although as well as entertaining Chelsea they have travelled to title hopefuls Arsenal and a resurgent Nottingham Forest in a rough opening run.

For all their well-documented issues, Chelsea were always likely to pose a significant threat to Wolves in Wanderers' first home outing of the campaign. But it was the manner of the defeat which was particularly concerning for Wolves, who shipped four second-half goals as they crumbled after the break.

Leaking goals at home has become a common theme for Wanderers, who have conceded in their last seven home league fixtures and last recorded a Molineux shutout in February against a Sheffield United side who scored a league-low 35 goals last term.

Wolves steadied the ship somewhat prior to the international break with a 2-0 home win over Burnley in the EFL Cup and a point on their trip to Forest thanks to Jean-Ricner Bellegarde's goal-of-the-month contender.

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and defender Craig Dawson have come into O'Neil's team and tightened things up a little at the back, but it is still hard to see Wolves keeping a formidable Newcastle attack quiet.

The Magpies have gained seven points from their opening three league fixtures, recording home wins over Southampton and Tottenham either side of a contentious draw at Bournemouth.

The Toon's win over Spurs owed much to a fine counter-attacking performance spearheaded by their front three of Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Harvey Barnes, while it was doggedness that won them the day against Southampton on the opening weekend, when they were down to ten men from the 28th minute following Fabian Schar's dismissal.

Schar is available on Sunday and midfielder Sandro Tonali could be handed a starting berth after making his first Premier League appearance since his gambling ban ended from the bench against Tottenham.

That should provide the visitors with some added defensive steel to compliment their attacking flair and Newcastle look well placed to replicate March's 3-0 home success over Wolves in the West Midlands.

Wolves have lost seven of their ten home league fixtures in 2024 and the Magpies could prolong their dismal Molineux run.

Wolves have lost five of their last six Premier League matches at Molineux.
