Preview

Sol Campbell will not have a better chance to break his Southend duck than he has when Wimbledon visit Roots Hall.

Already eliminated after losing their other two Southern Section Group C contests, pride will be driving on the Shrimpers.

And the Sky Bet League One strugglers certainly owe their fans a performance having won only once since August and lost all four under Campbell.

The latest of those reverses was a 1-0 defeat at Dover in the FA Cup on Sunday, a performance that was some distant short of the one they produced the week before in a loss by the same scoreline at Sunderland.

They have ten days off after this game so Campbell can send out a strong side, which his opposite number Glyn Hodges most definitely cannot.

Injuries have been piling up at Kingsmeadow and Hodges needs to tread carefully with his personnel with a trip to Blackpool in the league on Saturday followed by an FA Cup first-round replay at Doncaster three days later.

There are only two places between these poor teams in their division so Southend, on home soil, look a fair price.

International call-ups have thinned out West Ham’s academy squad as they head to Exeter in Southern Section Group E.

The young Hammers have been a breath of fresh air in this competition, scoring eight goals and conceding eight in their two games, but table-toppers Exeter are the best side they have faced yet.

Keeper Joseph Anang and forwards Anthony Scully and Sebastian Nybala are among a handful of West Ham kids who have been summoned by national sides.
