Sporting vs Manchester City predictions

Football often works in strange ways and newly appointed Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim will get a chance to win over his new fans before even stepping through the door at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese does not take over the reins at United until November 11 but he has a chance to increase the excitement surrounding his appointment on Tuesday when his Sporting side take on the Red Devils' bitter rivals Manchester City.

Amorim will be keen to grasp that opportunity and there are reasons to believe he will – none more so than the form of his star striker.

Viktor Gyokeres was on the radar of plenty of clubs following a prolific spell at Coventry, for whom he scored 38 goals in two seasons in the Championship, and it was Sporting who won the race to snap up the powerful Swede.

That has already proved to be a masterstroke. Gyokeres's 29 goals in 33 league games led the Portuguese giants to a first Primeira Liga title since 2021 last term and it is now a question of how long they will be able to hang on to their ever-improving talisman.

The Swede has bagged 20 goals in his 15 appearances for Sporting this season, as well as five in five for Sweden, and his blend of pace, strength and ruthless finishing ability is proving problematic for every defence he faces.

He has netted six goals in his last two games, making injuries to first-choice centre-backs John Stones and Ruben Dias all the more untimely for Premier League champions City.

The Citizens must also produce a response following their 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday and their exit from the League Cup at Tottenham just three days earlier.

Pep Guardiola will be counting down the days until January with City in desperate need of reinforcements due to their injury woes, but in their current state, they look the most vulnerable they have been since the Spaniard's first season at the Etihad.

City's only clean sheet in six away games came at Champions League basement boys Slovan Bratislava and Gyokeres will fancy his chances against an injury-hit and out-of-form defence.

Another Scandinavian striker, City's Erling Haaland, understandably leads the first-scorer market but he is out of form by his standards, having scored three goals in his last six appearances, so it could instead be worth siding with Sporting's star man to get the ball rolling in Lisbon.

Key stat

Viktor Gyokeres has scored 20 goals in 15 appearances for Sporting this season.
