Midweek Scottish football predictions

William Hill Premiership champions Celtic host Dundee United on Wednesday night with a 13-point lead over second-placed Rangers, who head to Dundee on Thursday.

The Bhoys, who have beaten Kilmarnock, Motherwell and St Johnstone 4-0 this season, crushed Ross County 5-0 and hammered Aberdeen 6-0 so should have few issues picking up three points at Parkhead.

Brendan Rodgers' side have scored 22 goals in their last six home games and backing over 3.5 goals looks a sound wager.

However, the same can’t be said for Rangers when the Govan side make the trip to Dundee.

The Light Blues enjoyed beating Celtic 3-0 last week, but the good work of their Old Firm success was undone when Philippe Clement’s men were held to a 3-3 draw by Hibernian at Easter Road.

That capital contest was the latest away disappointment for the Gers, who have struggled to gain any consistency on the road this season.

Rangers have lost at Celtic, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen and St Mirren and the Light Blues have also failed to win at Hibs, Motherwell and Hearts.

Clement’s men have just three away Premiership wins from ten games and have conceded seven goals in their last three road trips. That doesn’t look like the form of long odds-on favourites.

Clearly, Dundee are an inferior side to the Gers, but Tony Docherty’s men have been severely hampered by injuries this term and the Dee are a better team than their league standing suggests.

Only Celtic and Rangers have scored more home league goals than the 21 the Dark Blues have managed this season and Docherty’s men were impressive 3-1 winners at St Johnstone last time out.

Dundee look to have been a little underrated on the match betting market and there may be some value in backing both teams to score at Dens Park.
