Salzburg can finish off the job against Dortmund

Salzburg's 2-1 victory away to Borussia Dortmund was one of the shock results among the Europa League last-16 first legs but there was nothing fortunate about the outcome and the Austrian champions can land the knockout blow in the return match at the Red Bull Arena.

Dortmund were one of the fancied teams before the start of the Europa League knockout stage but have failed to match expectations.

They were heading for elimination in the round of 32 until left-back Marcel Schmelzer's 83rd-minute goal sealed a 1-1 draw away to Atalanta (enough for a 4-3 aggregate success).

And they are in deep trouble against Salzburg, who were the better side at the Westfalenstadion last Thursday, winning the shot count 15 to 13.

Salzburg have impressed throughout the competition, finishing unbeaten in Group I (four points above second-placed Marseille), and coming through a tricky round-of-16 tie against Real Sociedad 4-3 on aggregate.

Marco Rose's side could advance to the quarter-finals with a 1-0 defeat but it needn't be that nerve-wracking for the Austrians, who can extend their unbeaten run in the competition to 16 games.

Lyon were Europa League semi-finalists last season and can advance to the last eight in 2017-18 by recording a second successive victory over CSKA Moscow.

The French side came through 1-0 in the Russian capital last Thursday after edging an even contest, putting them in a strong position for the return match at the Groupama Stadium where they are usually hard to beat.

Lyon have won 12 of their last 15 Europa League home games and were 3-1 victors at home to La Liga side Villarreal last month.

CSKA are not as accomplished as Villarreal and are likely to suffer a similar fate.
