Wolves vs Crystal Palace predictions

With almost a quarter of the Premier League season done and dusted, Wolves are one of three sides still searching for their first league win of the campaign.

Only Southampton sit below the Midlands club in the table and pressure is growing on Wanderers boss Gary O'Neil, who has seen his side lose seven of their opening nine matches.

But the early standings do not tell the full story. While Wolves have only two points to show for their efforts, their expected-points tally is much higher at 7.14.

Few can argue that they have encountered arguably the toughest start to the season, having already played Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester City in the league.

And O'Neil can now look forward to a softer run of fixtures with Saturday's visit of Crystal Palace followed by matches against Southampton, Fulham, Bournemouth and Everton.

O'Neil will have been heartened by his side's valiant fightback at Brighton last week, when goals from Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha helped Wanderers salvage a 2-2 draw despite being 2-0 down with only two minutes of normal time remaining.

That was just another example of how dangerous Wolves can be going forwards and heading into the latest round fo fixtures they had scored more league goals (12) than Nottingham Forest (11), Bournemouth (11), Newcastle (nine) and Manchester United (eight), all of who are above them in the table.

That positive is mitigated by Wolves possessing the worst defensive record in the top flight (25 goals against), an area O'Neil must swiftly address if they are to make the most of their upcoming softer fixtures.

The Molineux faithful have had to be patient this term but they could be rewarded with a win at the tenth time of asking against Palace on Saturday evening.

The Eagles picked up their first win of the season at home to Tottenham last Sunday, winning 1-0 at Selhurst Park, but they had drawn blanks in three of their four previous matches.

A 2-1 win away to Aston Villa in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night will raise hopes of deep cup run, but Palace's players worked extremely hard off the ball at Villa Park and their exertions may count against them on their return to the West Midlands.

Wolves, meanwhile, were not in action in midweek and they can make the most of the added rest.

The hosts have scored in every league match since their opening 2-0 defeat at Arsenal and they could hold a decisive edge over Palace in the final third.

Key stat

Wolves have failed to score in just one of their nine Premier League matches this season.
