Wolves vs Aston Villa predictions

Victories over Leicester and Manchester United helped Wolves make some instant progress following the appointment of Vitor Pereira six weeks ago – but those triumphs must feel a long time ago now.

Wanderers have reverted back to their old ways since the start of the year, with four straight defeats seeing them return to the Premier League’s relegation zone.

Games against Nottingham Forest, Newcastle, Chelsea and Arsenal, all of whom are in the top six, highlight just how tricky a start to 2025 Wolves have had. And it doesn't get any easier for Pereira's men on Saturday with a West Midlands derby against an Aston Villa side unbeaten in five league matches and safely through to the last 16 of the Champions League.

Worryingly for Wolves and Pereira, the goals have started to dry up recently. Their only goal in four matches came from a set-piece in a 3-1 defeat at Chelsea and an injury to Norwegian striker Jorgen Strand Larsen puts even greater onus on Matheus Cunha to deliver the goods.

But Wolves's biggest problem this season has undoubtedly been at the back. Wanderers have shipped 52 goals in just 23 league outings games, only one fewer than rock-bottom Southampton.

Throw the suspension of disrupter-in-chief Joao Gomes, who was dismissed in last weekend's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, and their poor record against the Premier League’s elite this season into the mix and the visit of Villa begins to look even more daunting.

Wolves have picked up only one point in their 12 meetings with top-eight outfits this season and that came in a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest at the end of August.

So with the hosts short on confidence and missing two of their prized assets in Larsen and Gomes, Villa look well placed to continue their resurgence.

Unai Emery's men have yet to show that they can operate at their best following a midweek Champions League fixture this season – they have won only one of the seven league matches following a European match. But that includes draws against Bournemouth, Manchester United and West Ham and they may find a weakened Wolves, who have lost 15 of their 23 league games, easier to pass.

Keeping Cunha, who has netted ten of Wolves’ 32 league goals, quiet will be key for Villa, although three clean sheets in 23 league outings suggests that the hosts will get chances.

However, Wanderers have conceded at least twice in eight of their 11 home league matches and Villa, led by England striker Ollie Watkins and Wednesday’s hat-trick hero Morgan Rogers, have the attacking quality to exploit them.

Villa endured a rocky November but they have beaten Manchester City 2-1 and drawn 2-2 with Arsenal and Brighton since the end of December and appear to be slowly but surely rediscovering their spark.

Key stat

17 of Wolves' last 20 Premier League matches have gone over 2.5 goals.
