West Ham vs Arsenal predictions

West Ham eased the pressure on manager Julen Lopetegui with an impressive 2-0 Premier League victory at Newcastle on Monday but they may struggle to follow up against London rivals Arsenal.

The Hammers have lost all five games against teams that started this round of fixtures in the top eight and four of those defeats were by a margin of two or more goals.

Manchester City and Chelsea won 3-1 and 3-0 at the London Stadium and Lopetegui's men were beaten 4-1 at Tottenham and 3-0 at Nottingham Forest.

None of this season's defeats were as devastating as February's 6-0 rout by Arsenal in east London, where the visitors scored four times in 13 minutes towards the end of the first half.

The Gunners were firing on all cylinders at that stage of the 2023-24 campaign and they went on to thump Burnley 5-0 and Sheffield United 6-0 in their next two away fixtures.

Ominously for West Ham, Mikel Arteta's men have rediscovered their attacking fluency since the November international break and they should be capable of covering a one-goal handicap at the London Stadium.

The return from injury of captain and playmaker Martin Odegaard makes an enormous difference to Arsenal, who eased to a 3-0 home win over Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Tuesday's Champions League hosts Sporting had been unbeaten in 31 matches before being swatted aside 5-1 by the Gunners in Lisbon.

Arsenal had a frustrating run of results on the road before the international break, losing to nil at Bournemouth and Newcastle in the Premier League and suffering a 1-0 defeat at Inter in the Champions League.

They let slip a 1-0 lead to draw 1-1 at Chelsea in their last away game in the league but, with title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City meeting at Anfield on Sunday, Arteta will demand a more ruthless performance from his side at the London Stadium.

The Hammers responded to October's 4-1 defeat at Spurs by beating Manchester United 2-1 at home but they are struggling to put together a sequence of convincing displays.

The win over United was followed by a 3-0 defeat at Forest, where midfielder Edson Alvarez was sent off in first-half injury-time and a dismal 0-0 draw with Everton in their last home match.

The Toffees, one of the top flight's most limited attacking units, had 18 attempts at goal to West Ham's 11 and that stat does not bode well for the Hammers' clash with free-scoring Arsenal.
