Tottenham vs Liverpool predictions

Tottenham's last two home results were a 4-3 Premier League defeat to Chelsea and a 4-3 EFL Cup quarter-final win over Manchester United and another incident-packed contest is expected when they host league leaders Liverpool.

The clubs will meet in a two-legged EFL Cup semi-final in the new year but Tottenham's immediate objective is to improve their patchy league form.

Ange Postecoglou's men have lost five of their last ten games in the top flight and their depleted defence may struggle to prevent another high-scoring defeat against the rampant Reds.

Centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are sidelined along with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, whose understudy Fraser Forster had a shocker against Manchester United in Thursday's EFL Cup tie.

Forster's errors reduced Tottenham's lead from 3-0 to 3-2, setting up an anxious final 20 minutes for the home fans, and Postecoglou is short of options to freshen up his starting 11.

Liverpool's Arne Slot, in contrast, sent out a much-changed team for Wednesday's 2-1 win at Southampton, with youngsters Tyler Morton and Trey Nyoni in midfield and Wataru Endo dropping into central defence.

Endo's commanding display in that unfamiliar position offered yet another example of Slot's golden touch at the start of his Anfield reign.

The victory at St Mary's was Liverpool's 20th win in 24 matches in all competitions since the Dutchman's arrival, although they have dropped points in their last two league games.

Those slip-ups hardly suggest there is a crisis brewing for the leaders. Newcastle scored a 90th-minute equaliser in the 3-3 draw at St James' Park and Liverpool had Andy Robertson sent off in the 17th minute of last weekend's 2-2 home draw with Fulham.

The ten men came from behind twice against the Cottagers and Liverpool's forwards should be confident of rattling Tottenham's injury-hit rearguard.

Manchester United racked up 20 shots in Thursday's cup defeat to Spurs, who have taken just one point from their last three home league games against Ipswich, Fulham and Chelsea.

Liverpool have won and both teams have scored in three of the last four meetings between the clubs and the exception was Tottenham's controversial 2-1 home victory over the nine-man Reds last season.

A makeshift Spurs defence has looked vulnerable from set-pieces recently and Virgil van Dijk, who scored at Arsenal in October and had three efforts at goal against Manchester City on December 1, is worth backing to find the net.

United defender Jonny Evans scored a late header from a corner on Thursday and Roma centre-backs Evan Ndicka and Mats Hummels notched from set-piece situations in last month's Europa League draw at Spurs.
