Tottenham vs Arsenal predictions

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta put pen to paper on a new three-year contract on Thursday but the Spaniard may be denied a perfect week by bitter rivals Tottenham in the first north London derby of the season.

Under Arteta the Gunners have become Manchester City's closest challengers over the last two seasons. But keeping pace with the champions is a massive challenge and Arsenal already find themselves playing catch-up in the title race after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton before the international break.

There have been some outlandish suggestions that Sunday's Tottenham trip could make or break Arsenal's title ambitions, but Arteta will take a more measured view.

Arsenal have won at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in each of the last two seasons but their prospects of a third successive win at the home of their biggest rivals is weakened by a suspension to Declan Rice and an ankle injury suffered by captain Martin Odegaard on international duty.

Rice's leadership qualities will be missed in such a unique fixture but Odegaard's absence looks an even bigger blow.

The Norwegian contributed ten assists and eight goals last term and his cool head would have been invaluable in a fixture in which chaos and confusion often reigns.

Tottenham will look at Arsenal's absentees, which also include high-profile signing Mikel Merino, and realise they have a real opportunity.

However, their sense of anticipation may be tempered by apprehension due to a decidedly mixed start to the campaign.

Ange Postecoglou was approaching messiah status among Spurs fans after steering them to eight victories and two draws in their opening ten games of last season. However, the honeymoon period was a distant memory by the end of the campaign, with Tottenham finishing two points adrift of Aston Villa in the race for Champions League qualification.

Some of Tottenham's football is thrilling to watch but it means they live dangerously at the back and their final tally of 61 goals conceded last term was 32 more than Arsenal's and ten more than 15th-placed Everton.

Improvement was expected this term but Spurs have taken just four points from their first three games and continue to concede poor goals.

A 2-1 defeat at Newcastle last time out was a particular case in point as they commanded two-thirds of possession and won the shot count 20-9 on Tyneside but failed to make their second-half dominance pay.

Postecoglou is unlikely to significantly alter his approach but he may pay a little more respect to Arsenal, who were 3-0 up at half-time in last season's corresponding fixture. And Tottenham's defensive capability should be boosted by the return of Micky van de Ven, who was a notable absentee at Newcastle.

In recent seasons goals have been the order of the day in north London derbies with both teams happy to accept a large element of risk in the pursuit of victory.

This time there may be a dose of caution added to proceedings, however, and that increases the chances of a stalemate.

Key stat

Tottenham have gone 84 Premier League matches without being involved in a 0-0 draw.

Tottenham vs Arsenal bet builder predictions

Under 2.5 goals
There have been some high-scoring north London derbies in recent times but a tighter contest could be in store on Sunday.

James Maddison to have a shot on target
The attacking midfielder has registered six shots this season and looks as likely as any Tottenham player to warm the palms of Arsenal keeper David Raya.

Destiny Udogie to be carded
Udogie is a regular yellow card recipient and may cross the disciplinary threshold with his efforts to keep tabs on Bukayo Saka.
