Southampton vs Tottenham predictions

Ange Postecoglou is one of many Premier League managers currently under the microscope after Tottenham's recent slump in form, but he can ease the pressure on his position with an entertaining win over basement boys Southampton.

Spurs head to St Mary's without a win in five games in all competitions and they have suffered back-to-back Premier League defeats, limping to a 1-0 loss at Bournemouth before letting a 2-0 lead slip in last weekend's 4-3 reverse at home to Chelsea.

Four of their last six away league games have ended in defeat, although a 3-0 win at Manchester United and a 4-0 rout of Manchester City in between highlights their ability as well as their unpredictability.

That is part of the reason why Spurs find themselves in the bottom half of the Premier League table after 15 games and it is why Postecoglou's gung-ho approach is coming under increased criticism.

Defensive injuries to Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies mean Postecoglou may have to prioritise his attacking talent and it is no surprise that both teams to score is as short as 3-10.

Spurs have managed only three clean sheets in 15 league outings and without Romero and Van de Ven it is hard to see them recording what would be a rare shutout on the south coast.

However, they should have enough going forward with Dominic Solanke, Heung-Min Son and Brennan Johnson to take care of a Southampton side who are rooted to the foot of the table following 12 defeats in their opening 15 games.

The Saints look woefully out of their depth in the top flight, with manager Russell Martin committed to his possession-based playing style, something that has proven their own undoing at times.

For all their struggles, Southampton still carry some attacking threat and they have failed to score in only three of their last 11 league matches, so they may fancy their chances.

The Saints have netted in home defeats to both Liverpool and Chelsea and they have enough quality in forward areas to cause problems for a depleted Spurs rearguard which is also missing first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

However, a goal or even two is likely to be in vain as the Saints have conceded three or more in four of their last six home league matches and this is a contest in which Tottenham can ill-afford to slip up.

Key stat

Both teams have scored in four of Southampton’s last five home league matches.
