Southampton vs Manchester United predictions

Manchester United had to deal with a deluge of criticism after their 3-0 loss at home to Liverpool but they can move towards calmer waters by defeating Southampton at St Mary's Stadium.

The break probably came at a good time for United manager Erik ten Hag, affording him time to go through the finer points of the Liverpool loss.

However, the Dutchman needs a strong response from his players, who are moving towards their first hectic period of the season.

United face seven games over the next 23 days, including an EFL Cup third-round clash at home to Barnsley and Europa League fixtures at home to FC Twente and away to Porto, but it is Premier League points which they desperately need in order to repair the damage done by back-to-back defeats.

Ten Hag has plenty to ponder, including what to do with Casemiro, who delivered an error-strewn performance against Liverpool and was substituted at half-time.

New signing Manuel Ugarte is available and might get his first United start at the end of a busy week which included his involvement in Uruguay's goalless draw away to Venezuela on Tuesday night.

United are hampered by the absences of several senior players including Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund, but they have sufficient resources to put Southampton to the sword.

Saints started the season with plenty of optimism but reality has set in with a trio of Premier League defeats.

They opened with a 1-0 loss at Newcastle, who were reduced to ten men by Fabian Schar's 28th minute red card.

There were positives for Southampton to take from aspects of their performance at St James' Park, where they dominated possession and territory and won the shot count 19-3, but subsequent defeats at home to Nottingham Forest and at Brentford were major disappointments against opponents they would have hoped to compete with on fairly even terms.

Saints' manager Russell Martin is fully committed to a high tempo, possession-based approach and his team are joint-second on the possession averages with a share of 68.2 per cent per game.

However, Martin's side have scored just one goal (the lowest in the division) and their high defensive line leaves them constantly vulnerable to counter-attacks.

In their last home game, Southampton were far too easily exposed by Forest, who had eight shots on target and should have won by more than the 1-0 scoreline.

United carry an even greater threat than Forest and, for all their recent problems, they look well worth backing at a shade of odds-on.

Southampton vs Manchester United bet builder predictions

Manchester United to win
United need a response after their 3-0 loss to Liverpool and they can bounce back with a victory over Southampton, who look the weakest of the newly-promoted teams.

Marcus Rashford to score any time
Rashford has been getting lots of stick but his pace could be key to exposing Southampton's high defensive line.

Flynn Downes to be carded
The 25-year-old midfielder collected 11 yellow cards last season and looks a likely candidate for a caution this weekend.
