Southampton vs Liverpool predictions

One look at the Premier League table will tell you how Southampton's visit from Liverpool is likely to go, with the Saints rock-bottom and 24 points off the top-of-the-table Reds.

Arne Slot could hardly have had a better start to life on Merseyside as the Reds are also top of the Champions League standings thanks to a perfect record in that competition, and the Dutchman has made great strides in helping the Liverpool faithful get over the departure of his predecessor, Jurgen Klopp.

By not straying too far from Klopp's foundations while still implementing some tactical changes of his own, Slot has settled into life at Anfield with ease, winning 15 of his first 17 matches in charge.

One thing which has impressed early on in the Dutchman's Liverpool career is his ability to get the same performances from his side on the road as he does when roared on by the Kop, something his predecessor was not always able to do. The Reds won only five of their final 12 away games of the Klopp era.

By contrast, Liverpool have won seven of their eight away matches this term, beating Manchester United, Milan and RB Leipzig in a run which has only seen them held to a 2-2 draw by title rivals Arsenal at the Emirates.

The Reds are so strong on their travels that they should have no issues in seeing off basement boys Southampton, who have lost nine of their opening 11 league matches.

The Saints' only league win of the campaign came via a narrow 1-0 victory over Everton, but they may not be so fortunate against the other Merseyside outfit.

Southampton have been trailing at half-time in six of their nine Premier League losses this term and Russell Martin will probably have his half-time team-talk pre-planned.

Liverpool have led going into the break in five of their last seven away games and they should continue that trend against the sorry Saints, who may be haunted by a familiar face.

Before this weekend, no Premier League side had conceded more set-piece goals on their own patch than Southampton's total of five. Liverpool will look to exploit that weakness and former Saint Virgil van Dijk is fancied to benefit from that frailty.

The Dutchman is expected to be fit and given his immense stature and aerial prowess, which was on full display when he scored against Arsenal last month, he may make the most of Southampton's significant weakness from set-pieces.

Key stat

Liverpool have been leading at half-time in five of their last seven away games, going on to win each of those matches.

Southampton vs Liverpool bet builder predictions

Liverpool to win
The Reds have won 15 of their 17 matches this season and should have far too much for the Saints, who have lost nine of their 11 league games.

Virgil van Dijk over 0.5 shots on target
Southampton are poor at defending set-pieces and Virgil van Dijk, who has registered a shot on target in each of his last two away games for the Reds, could be a real threat in the air.

Mateus Fernandes to be booked
The Portuguese midfielder will likely be tasked with tracking back to help keep tabs on Mohamed Salah but, given he has been booked twice in his last four Premier League appearances, it is likely he may struggle with that assignment.
