Southampton vs Chelsea predictions

Southampton have shown a few signs of life in the last couple of weeks – they were a disallowed goal away from winning at Brighton on Friday – but a raft of suspensions have made their home game against Chelsea even tougher.

Enzo Maresca's Londoners were excellent against Aston Villa on Sunday and leaders Liverpool are the only team to have beaten the Blues since a 2-0 loss to champions Manchester City on the opening weekend.

However, their 3-0 success over the Villans was the first occasion in their last eight league games that Chelsea have kept a clean sheet and the potential absence of centre-back Wesley Fofana could be an issue at St Mary's.

They have enough ability going forward – Cole Palmer continues to inspire and striker Nicolas Jackson is in fine form – to ease to victory. But Russell Martin's side gave Liverpool a fright last month, when they were 2-1 up against Arne Slot's side before losing 3-2, and the Saints have scored in six of their last eight league games.

Key stat

Ten of Chelsea's last 12 away league games have featured at least three goals.
