Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle predictions
Stan Collymore and Bryan Roy were leading the line and Frank Clark was the first of a long list of managers attempting to move out of Brian Clough's shadow the last time Nottingham Forest were as high as they are now in the Premier League and, nearly 30 years later, optimism abounds on the banks of the Trent.
Those feelings will amplify should they see off Newcastle, but the signs are that it could be a tight match against a visiting side who are also enjoying the tonic of recent victories over Chelsea and Arsenal.
The Magpies, who have never lost in their six Premier League visits to the City Ground, kept a lid on the Gunners last week and defensive solidity has been a theme for Eddie Howe's side this season and, after also holding Manchester City to a draw, they have the confidence to repel any top-flight forward line.
A 2-1 league defeat at Stamford Bridge shortly before they got revenge on Chelsea in the League Cup is the only one of their last seven games that has featured more than two goals, and while Newcastle were just tenth in the table at the start of the weekend, they had the third-tightest defence in the league before this weekend's fixtures.
Ten goals have been conceded while Forest have let in seven - leaders Liverpool had shipped six before Saturday's trip to Aston Villa - so it would not be a surprise if those efficient backlines dominated this clash.
The key to Forest's success this season under Nuno Espirito Santo's leadership has been their ability to grind out results, which they did in gaining 1-0 successes at Southampton and most notably at Anfield.
But they went into the weekend as the lowest scorers in the top eight with a heavy reliance on Chris Wood, who has scored eight of their 14 goals.
The former Magpie stung his old club with a hat-trick at St James' Park on Boxing Day, so it is a mild concern that if the visitors can keep the New Zealander quiet, his teammates may not be able to step up.
Two of the three occasions when Forest have scored more than once in the league have come in their last two matches, but Leicester were dismal in their 3-1 defeat to their nearby rivals and a 3-0 win over West Ham was aided by Hammers midfielder Edson Alvarez being sent off before half-time.
So while the good times may be back, the goals have yet to arrive and they may not flow in this one.
Key stat
Newcastle have conceded more than once in just two of their 13 games this season
