Chelsea vs Arsenal predictions

Legend has it that after meeting the devil at a junction, American blues artist Robert Johnson sold his soul in exchange for musical mastery and commercial success.

Mikel Arteta might be some way from considering a Faustian pact but it's hard not to feel that his Arsenal team's season is at a crossroads going into Sunday's trip to Chelsea.

They are winless in three league games and their misery extended into Europe in midweek as they went down 1-0 at Inter, losing for the first time in this season's Champions League after Hakan Calhanoglu tucked home from the penalty spot following an unfortunate handball call against Mikel Merino.

Luck may have been against the Gunners for the penalty but their inability to break down the Nerazzurri's low block underlined the importance of Martin Odegaard's absence and their response of tossing balls into the box with limited success earned Arteta further criticism for his almost Arsene Wenger-esque refusal to sign a striker.

Odegaard managed the final moments at San Siro but is unlikely to be fit enough to start at Stamford Bridge and another defeat for the Gunners will make the November break before they host Nottingham Forest feel considerably longer.

Conversely, the internationals might be coming at the wrong time for Chelsea, who rotated for Thursday's 8-0 Conference League win over Noah and are unbeaten in eight at home.

Last Sunday's 1-1 draw at Manchester United lifted Enzo Maresca's side above Arsenal in the Premier League on goal difference but they will need to halt the Gunners' perfect run of six London derby victories in 2024.

Having Cole Palmer fit will help. The 22-year-old reportedly had a scan after being scythed down by Lisandro Martinez at Old Trafford, but despite Maresca's reticence when questioned on his fitness, the Wythenshawe whizz kid was at the Bridge on Thursday and is set to play.

Even if he doesn't make it, the Blues' previously-derided approach to squad-building now looks to have provided Maresca with the depth to cover most injuries and they are on a good run.

For all the holes in Johnson's tale, there are similarities to Arteta's plight in that he has often come close to cracking the tactical code and taking his team to success.

Speaking on Friday, the Spaniard insisted his side "don't need a reset". However, they look second-best heading into their battle against the Blues.

The coach's desperation to succeed is clear but another defeat may mean the Basque boss has to find something otherworldly to save Arsenal's season.
