Nottingham Forest vs Aston Villa predictions

Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa have identical records in this season's Premier League and the Midlands rivals look set for a competitive contest at the City Ground this weekend.

Both clubs are enjoying excellent campaigns, earning 25 points from 15 games, and Forest's goal difference is one better than Villa, who have scored and conceded 23 goals this term.

The Tricky Trees claimed a memorable 3-2 victory at Manchester United last weekend so should be fresher than Villa, who beat Champions League hosts RB Leipzig by the same scoreline on Tuesday night.

That was an end-to-end encounter, settled in Villa's favour by Ross Barkley's deflected strike in the 85th minute, but Unai Emery's men face a testing run of league fixtures either side of Christmas.

They ended an eight-match winless streak with home victories over poor travellers Brentford and bottom club Southampton but will have to raise their standards domestically in the next few weeks.

The trip to Forest is followed by a home game against Manchester City, an away fixture at Newcastle and a Villa Park clash with Brighton.

The match betting suggests taking maximum points at the City Ground will be difficult for a Villa side who have lost their last three away league games at Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea by an aggregate score of 9-1.

Forest had also hit a flat spot before their victory at Old Trafford. They were beaten 3-1 at home by Newcastle before the November international break, needed a Chris Wood penalty to edge past struggling Ipswich 1-0 and suffered 3-0 defeats at Arsenal and Manchester City.

However, there is no doubt that Nuno Espirito Santo has rejuvenated the team this season and they pose a goal threat with Morgan Gibbs-White, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Elliot Anderson and Jota Silva teeing up in-form striker Wood.

Forest shocked leaders Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield in September but their other six league wins all came against teams starting the weekend in the bottom eight.

That includes last weekend's win at United, who had seven shots on target to Forest's three, and Villa are certainly capable of troubling the home defence.

These clubs shared a 5-5 draw in the Championship in November 2018 and they look well matched again this season. Villa's lack of clean sheets on the road points to a bet on the draw and both teams to score.
