Newcastle vs West Ham predictions

If reports are true, West Ham spent the international break exploring potential replacements for their manager Julen Lopetegui, who apparently has two games to save his job.

The issue for the Spaniard is, if that is the case, those two games are against a resurgent Newcastle and an Arsenal side intent on getting back in the title race.

A goalless draw with Everton before the international break will have done nothing to appease unhappy Hammers fans, who were calling for his head after an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest at the start of November.

Prior to that demolition at the City Ground, West Ham's previous away outing saw them thrashed 4-1 by rivals Tottenham, suggesting they are in for a tough time on Tyneside.

Newcastle have beaten top-four sides Chelsea and Arsenal to nil in their last two home matches before landing an impressive 3-1 win at Nottingham Forest last time out.

Eddie Howe's tweak of bringing Joe Willock into midfield, shifting Joelinton to the left-wing and moving Anthony Gordon to the right seems to have worked wonders and, having lost just one of their last 15 home games, it is difficult to envisage the Magpies struggling against the Hammers.

West Ham were difficult to play through at times under David Moyes, something which cannot be side of the current Irons side.

Prior to this weekend's matches only the three promoted sides and Wolves had a worse expected-goals-against figure than the Hammers' 21.36 and they could be breached early by a talented Newcastle outfit.

The Magpies have led at half-time in all five of their home wins this season and it would be no surprise to see them be in front at the break against a West Ham side who have scored just five first-half goals in the Premier League this term.

The Hammers have tried to employ a high defensive line under Lopetegui, something which has failed miserably – highlighted when Nicolas Jackson continually broke through one-on-one in Chelsea's 3-0 rout of West Ham in September.

Newcastle have a speedy and ruthless forward of their own in Alexander Isak and he could be key to helping the Magpies secure victory, potentially helping himself to a couple of goals in the process.

Following a slow start to the campaign, the Swedish star has scored in each of his last four Newcastle appearances. Isak netted a brace in both of meetings with West Ham last term and could again punish a woeful Hammers defence.

Key stat

Newcastle have led at the break in all of their five home wins this season.
