Newcastle vs Wolves predictions

The festive period can make or break a team’s season and no Premier League enjoyed a more positive time over Christmas than Newcastle.

A 4-2 defeat at Brentford in mid-December left the Magpies 12th in the table with a goal difference of -2.

A month later Eddie Howe’s men are fifth with a goal difference of +12 and one foot in the EFL Cup final after opening up a two-goal lead over Arsenal in the first leg of their last-four clash.

The Magpies have won their last eight games in all competitions by an aggregate score of 23-3 and have beaten Manchester United, Tottenham and the Gunners away from home in that spell.

They were workmanlike in their 3-1 win over Bromley at the weekend but that was with a heavily rotated side, and with their starters returning for this midweek clash with Wolves, they should be back in fine form.

The hosts have scored at least two goals in their last ten games in all competitions, led by Alexander Isak who has netted ten in his last nine outings.

The Magpies will be licking their lips at the sight of the leakiest defence in the division, with Wolves having conceded 45 times in 20 matches.

The Old Gold have improved under Vitor Pereira, beating Leicester, Manchester United and Bristol City since Gary O’Neil’s departure.

However their away record in the top flight remains poor, as they have won just two of their last 16 road trips and have lost nine of those.

The return of Matheus Cunha from suspension is a big boost for the visitors but their defence remains a major issue and new signing Emmanuel Agbadou will have to hit the ground running.

Goalkeeper has also been a problem position for Pereira’s side. Jose Sa has the second-worst save percentage (56.25) and goals prevented (-4.1) figures of any keeper in the top flight according to Opta.

Both teams have scored in 16 of Wolves’ 23 games in all competitions and with the return of Cunha they could play their part in a high-scoring affair.

However their defensive frailties look likely to haunt them once again, particularly against the most in-form team in the top flight.

Six of Wolves’ ten away games this season have gone over 3.5 goals and a repeat of that is fancied in another Newcastle win.
