Newcastle vs Man City predictions
Newcastle and Manchester City met in all three domestic competitions last season and the Citizens had to dig deep to complete a Premier League double over the Magpies.
A Julian Alvarez strike gave them a 1-0 league win at the Etihad in August before Newcastle's Alexander Isak scored the only goal of the game in September's EFL Cup clash at St James' Park.
In January, City needed late goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Oscar Bobb to come from behind and claim a 3-2 victory in Newcastle before Bernardo Silva's brace sealed a 2-0 FA Cup quarter-final win at home.
Both clubs had frustrating results last weekend. John Stones's 98th-minute equaliser for the champions against ten-man Arsenal did little to improve Pep Guardiola's mood after a fractious 2-2 draw.
And Newcastle missed the chance to go top of the table as their unbeaten start to the season ended with a 3-1 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Given the number of shots the Magpies have been allowing their opponents in the early weeks of the season, that result may have been coming and manager Eddie Howe admitted that "it wasn’t a good reflection on our style, our way of playing".
The postponement of the midweek EFL Cup tie at AFC Wimbledon has given Howe additional time to plan for the City game but striker Isak is a doubt due to a toe injury.
With Callum Wilson sidelined, Newcastle will be desperate for their top goalscorer to be passed fit as they needed long-range strikes from Fabian Schar and Harvey Barnes to earn a 2-1 win at Wolves on September 15.
City, of course, have their own medical problems and the club have confirmed that influential midfielder Rodri will miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury against Arsenal.
Playmaker De Bruyne is expected to miss out with a groin issue while Norwegian youngster Bobb, the matchwinner in this fixture last season, is another absentee.
With Howe demanding defensive improvement from the hosts, a low-scoring City win looks the best bet and they have kept clean sheets in five of their last six away games in the league.
They looked short of attacking inspiration against Arsenal's 6-3 formation in the second half and were also held to a goalless draw by Inter in their Champions League opener.
Since Christmas, though, only Arsenal (twice), Chelsea and Liverpool have managed to take a point off City in the Premier League and, despite Rodri's absence, they should be backed to grind out a victory at St James' Park.
Key stat
Manchester City have won five of their last six Premier League away matches to nil.

Erling Haaland to score at any time
Newcastle have conceded 61 shots from inside the area in five games this season so they are unlikely to keep the in-form Haaland quiet.
Joelinton to be shown a card
The Magpies midfielder has been booked in three of his last four league games against City and has three yellow cards in five starts this term.
Dan Burn to have over 0.5 shots
City struggled against Arsenal's set-pieces last weekend and the towering Burn has had five attempts at goal in his last five appearances.
