Newcastle vs Liverpool predictions

Steve McClaren was in the dugout the last time Newcastle beat Liverpool and the form book suggests the Toon's long wait for a win over the Reds will linger on at St James’ Park on Wednesday.

Almost nine years have passed since Georginio Wijnaldum wrapped up a 2-0 win for McClaren's Magpies, with Newcastle failing to win any of the pair's subsequent 15 league and cup meetings.

They will not exactly be relishing Wednesday's visit from the Premier League leaders, either.

Liverpool have established a nine-point lead at the top-flight summit and were cut into 4-7 to win the title following Sunday's rousing 2-0 win over Manchester City at Anfield.

Arne Slot's Reds dominated from the off against the champions, taking only 12 minutes to hit the front through Cody Gakpo, and their fresh and vibrant performance was even more impressive given that it followed hot on the heels of a 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League only four days previously.

Both those victories were achieved in front of their own fans but, in further bad news for Newcastle, the Reds have been just as ruthless on the road this season.

Liverpool have won eight of their nine away fixtures in all competitions, with Arsenal the only side to stop Slot's men in a 2-2 draw at the Emirates at the end of October.

That said, Newcastle have saved their best performances for matches against bigger teams.

Eddie Howe's Toon have beaten Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal this season, although their victory over Chelsea came against a second-string Blues side in the EFL Cup and Arsenal were not exactly in blistering form when they visited Tyneside.

The Magpies have blown hot and cold for much of the campaign and have followed a three-match winning run with a 2-0 home defeat to West Ham and a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in their last two Premier League fixtures.

Howe's side conceded in the 94th minute against Palace, although a point was the least the Eagles deserved given that an own goal from Marc Guehi had given Newcastle the lead and the Tynesiders failed to register a single shot on target at Selhurst Park.

There was further frustration for Howe as star striker Alexander Isak came off with a hip injury after just 22 minutes in south London and could miss out against the league leaders.

Isak's potential absence severely hampers Newcastle's attacking output and it's not like they have been particularly sharp in front of goal in any case, scoring only 14 times in 13 league matches, four of which have been scored by the Swede.

There is a temptation to back a low-scoring away win for the visitors but, at 4-5, Liverpool look a fine price to maintain their searing pace at the summit with a 12th league success of the campaign.

Key stat

Newcastle have won just two of their last nine Premier League fixtures.

Newcastle vs Liverpool bet builder predictions

Liverpool to win
Liverpool have won their last seven matches in all competitions and look primed to continue their winning run at the expense of the inconsistent Magpies.

Under 3.5 goals
Newcastle's league fixtures have averaged just 2.15 goals per game this term, so punters should anticipate a low-scoring contest on Tyneside.

Mohamed Salah to score first
The likely absence of Newcastle's main goal threat Alexander Isak increases the prospects of 11-goal Mohamed Salah striking the first blow at St James' on Wednesday.
