Newcastle vs Arsenal predictions

Having taken only one point from their last two Premier League matches against Bournemouth and Liverpool, Arsenal need to serve up a response to their title rivals on Saturday's trip to Newcastle.

Little went right for the ten-man Gunners in a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth a fortnight ago but they delivered a much more measured performance to draw 2-2 with second-placed Liverpool last Sunday.

However, those results have left Mikel Arteta's men five points adrift of Manchester City at the top-flight summit and any further setbacks could do serious damage to the Londoners' title aspirations.

Arteta will be heartened by the return of star centre-back William Saliba at St James' Park after he missed the draw with Liverpool through suspension. And in another boost to the Gunners boss, Saliba could be partnered by regular defensive partner Gabriel Magalhaes, who limped off against the Reds last weekend but is expected to be fit.

Arteta could afford to ring the changes in Wednesday’s 3-0 win at Preston in the EFL Cup, starting regulars Declan Rice, Thomas Partey, Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz on the bench, whereas Newcastle were at almost full-strength for their 2-0 victory at home to Chelsea.

Winning a trophy is of great importance to Eddie Howe and Newcastle supporters but things have completely tailed off for the Magpies in the Premier League after a strong start.

The Toon took ten points from their opening four games, despite playing nowhere near as well as that return suggests, but they have failed to win any of their subsequent five league outings.

They did hold champions Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at home during that period but they’ve also been beaten by Fulham, Brighton and Chelsea, with a lack of squad depth a potential problem in their bid for European qualification.

St James' Park can be a fortress when things are going well but the Toon have won only six of their last 14 home league games and Howe must be feeling a little pressure following Newcastle's recent dip in Premier League form.

It is therefore difficult to see the tide turning against Arsenal, who have already won at Tottenham and Aston Villa this season without conceding and were only denied victory at Manchester City by a 98th-minute leveller from John Stones after playing the entire second half with ten men.

Indeed, the Gunners have conceded just six goals in their last 16 away games, keeping 11 clean sheets, with Arteta setting up his side to be incredibly hard to beat on their travels.

Arsenal have claimed maximum points in ten of their last 13 Premier League matches on the road and they can get their title charge back on track with victory in the North East.

Key stat

Arsenal have lost only two of their last 15 away games in the Premier League.

Newcastle vs Arsenal bet builder predictions

Under 3.5 goals
The Gunners tend to keep things tight away from home and only one of the last nine meetings between the pair has gone over 3.5 goals.

Bukayo Saka to score or assist
The Arsenal ace has three goals and seven assists from only eight Premier League appearances this season and could be Newcastle's tormentor-in-chief on Tyneside.

Over 2.5 Newcastle cards
The Magpies have had a taxing week, so fatigue could play a part, and they have collected at least three cards in three of their four home league games this season.
