Manchester United vs Nottingham Forest predictions
Manchester United tasted their first defeat of the Ruben Amorim era as they limped to a 2-0 loss at Arsenal on Wednesday and they look on the short side in their bid to serve up a response against high-flying Nottingham Forest.
The Red Devils have had a mixed start to life in the Premier League under Amorim, drawing 1-1 at Ipswich before routing Everton 4-0 in the Portuguese manager's opening league assignment at Old Trafford.
But the midweek two-goal defeat at Arsenal, who won the shot count 14-5, was an indicator that there is still much work to be done and their defensive deficiencies could be exposed by a Forest side who are seventh and three points better off than the Red Devils.
The Tricky Trees have lost three of their last four league matches but 3-0 defeats at Arsenal and Manchester City, who were on a recovery mission following a seven-game winless run, may best be ignored.
Prior to losing 3-1 at home to Newcastle on November 10, Forest had reeled off three straight successes over Crystal Palace, Leicester and West Ham and they have been far from disgraced on their travels against some of the league's elite clubs.
Nuno Espirito Santo's side remain the only team in the Premier League to have inflicted defeat on leaders Liverpool this season, having recorded a shock 1-0 win at Anfield, while they have also earned score draws at Brighton and Chelsea.
United struggled to deal with Arsenal's set-piece threat at the Emirates, with Jurrien Timber and William Saliba the beneficiaries in the box, and that is an area Forest will be looking to exploit with towering forward Chris Wood leading the charge.
Nuno's side have already scored five set-piece goals this season, only two fewer than the Gunners, while the pace they possess on the counter-attack through Anthony Elanga, Morgan Gibbs-White and Callum Hudson-Odoi is sure to get an unsettled United defence on the turn.
That said, the Red Devils' strength lies in attack and, having failed to score in only three of their last 17 home league games, they should at least make their mark on a Forest defence who have conceded in seven of their last ten matches.
Forest have been breached three times by Newcastle, Arsenal and City within their last four top-flight fixtures and backing both teams to score, which landed in both their Premier League meetings last season, may be the strongest wager in Saturday’s tea-time kick-off.
Key stat
Manchester United have conceded in seven of their last 11 home games.
