Manchester United vs Chelsea predictions
Manchester United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy benefited from a new-manager bounce on Wednesday as his side carved apart Leicester 5-2 in the EFL Cup, but Sunday's Premier League visit from Chelsea will present a much sterner test for the Red Devils.
Van Nistelrooy oversaw an energetic, attacking display from United in midweek and will take charge of three more games before the international break, after which new manager Ruben Amorim will begin his tenure.
Sporting Lisbon head coach Amorim will become United's sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013 and he has a seismic job on his hands at Old Trafford.
Wednesday's win over the Foxes masked some of those issues but that result should be taken with a pinch of salt given Leicester have been pretty permeable this season.
United have otherwise struggled in front of goal with just eight goals in nine Premier League fixtures this season and their 2-1 loss to West Ham last weekend prompted the dismissal of Erik ten Hag and nudged them down to 14th spot.
Playing under a new manager may well give United's players a lift but their problems will not be resolved overnight and visitors Chelsea are in a good position to expose their vulnerabilities.
The Blues lost 2-0 away to Newcastle in the EFL Cup on Wednesday but Enzo Maresca changed his entire 11 for that match and it was essentially Chelsea's B team who were beaten on Tyneside.
A top-four finish looks well within reach for the Londoners this term and that is evidently the club's focus ahead of a busy couple of months.
Maresca's men have won four of their last six contests in the Premier League, only dropping points in a 2-1 defeat away to Liverpool and a 1-1 draw with overachieving Nottingham Forest.
They have looked especially dangerous up front this season with Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson netting 13 goals between them in the league and that renewed attacking verve could give them the edge at Old Trafford.
Palmer and Jackson were among a handful of Chelsea first-teamers given a rest in midweek and they should be fresher than United, who have lacked urgency and energy at the best of times this season.
Chelsea are six points better off than United and they can stretch that advantage to nine with a victory on Sunday.
Key stat
Chelsea have taken 13 points from a possible 18 in their last six Premier League matches.

Manchester United vs Chelsea bet builder predictions
Chelsea to win
Chelsea have won four of their last six Premier League games and can see off a Manchester United side in transition.
Cole Palmer to score or assist
Cole Palmer is one of the league's in-form players and could add to his tally of seven goals and five assists.
Diogo Dalot to commit two or more fouls
No Manchester United player has made more fouls than Diogo Dalot's 11 in the league and the full-back could be forced into a couple of cynical challenges.
