Man Utd vs Newcastle predictions

Newcastle have won only one of their last 39 league meetings with Manchester United at Old Trafford but the Magpies should be backed to snap that streak in their final fixture of 2024.

While Red Devils fans can always reflect on their club's glorious history, the current United side looks in miserable shape after Premier League defeats to Bournemouth and Wolves either side of Christmas.

The Cherries were good value for their 3-0 victory at Old Trafford and relegation-threatened Wolves capitalised on a 47th-minute red card for United skipper Bruno Fernandes to win 2-0 at Molineux.

Newcastle, in contrast, are full of festive cheer. They have beaten Leicester 4-0, Ipswich 4-0 and Aston Villa 3-0 in their last three league fixtures while also easing past Brentford 3-1 in the EFL Cup quarter-final at St James' Park.

They are narrow favourites to deliver manager Eddie Howe's first league triumph at Old Trafford at the eighth attempt, and backing the visitors to cover a one-goal handicap is a tempting proposition.

Three of Manchester United's four league defeats under Ruben Amorim were by at least a two-goal margin and the other was a 3-2 home loss to Nottingham Forest.

Amorim's men were 3-0 down at Tottenham in the EFL Cup quarter-final before a couple of calamitous goalkeeping errors from Fraser Forster raised hopes of a scarcely deserved comeback.

They lost that game 4-3 against an out-of-form Spurs side and last season their League Cup campaign ended with a 3-0 home defeat to Newcastle.

The suspended Fernandes has either scored or assisted nine of his side's meagre tally of 21 league goals this season and Marcus Rashford, the Red Devils' joint-top scorer with four goals, is out of favour.

While Manchester United had to play with ten men for virtually the entire second half against Wolves, Newcastle benefited from Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran's 32nd-minute dismissal on Boxing Day.

Howe's side already led 1-0 thanks to Anthony Gordon's second-minute goal and they finished the game with 22 shots to Villa's four.

Newcastle allowed Ipswich only two attempts on target at Portman Road and won the shot count 27-4 against Leicester, so backing a comprehensive away win could prove profitable.

A midfield trio of Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali looks a cut above any unit that Amorim can select and, unlike their hosts, the Magpies have in-form wide players in Gordon and Jacob Murphy and a top-class striker in Alexander Isak.

Newcastle have kept three clean sheets on the spin in the league and Manchester United, beaten 3-0 at Old Trafford by Liverpool, Tottenham and Bournemouth this term, could finish the year with another chastening home defeat.

Key stat

Newcastle have won their last four league and cup matches by an aggregate score of 14-1.
