Liverpool vs Chelsea predictions
Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool thrashed Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea 4-1 in January's Premier League fixture at Anfield but a more competitive contest is expected when Arne Slot's Reds host Enzo Maresca's Blues on Sunday.
Liverpool had 28 shots to Chelsea's four in last season's home victory, hitting the woodwork twice, but that dominant display was an anomaly given that eight of the last nine meetings between these sides have ended in 90-minute draws.
The opening-weekend clash at Stamford Bridge ended 1-1 and Liverpool needed a 118th-minute header from Virgil van Dijk to seal a 1-0 win over Chelsea in the EFL Cup final.
Slot has enjoyed a terrific start to his career in England, winning nine of his first ten games in all competitions.
The only blot on his record was a 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest but Liverpool have had to work hard for their last two league wins, beating struggling Wolves 2-1 at Molineux and out-of-form Crystal Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park.
They were far from convincing in their last Champions League fixture, a 2-0 win over Bologna, and there is no doubt that Slot has been helped by a gentle early-season schedule.
Forest, tenth in the table at the start of this round of fixtures, are the highest-ranked team Liverpool have faced in the league and the Reds look short enough to take three points against a dangerous Chelsea side.
Slot told the media on Friday that key men Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister will have to be assessed after their World Cup qualifying exertions in South America and the Reds are missing Brazil goalkeeper Alisson due to injury.
Maresca will be forced into a defensive reshuffle as Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella are both suspended after, somewhat impressively, collecting five yellow cards in just seven league games.
Despite the Blues' bloated squad, Maresca has a clear vision of his strongest 11 and nine Chelsea players have started at least six of their first seven league matches.
They were not disgraced in an opening 2-0 home defeat to champions Manchester City and have won their first three away games, at Wolves, Bournemouth and West Ham, by an aggregate score of 10-2.
Cole Palmer is living up to last season's heroics with six goals and five assists in seven matches and four of his goals came in the first half of a chaotic 4-2 home win over Brighton.
Liverpool are unlikely to be as open as the Seagulls were but Slot's Reds are no certainties to start a tough run of upcoming fixtures with a victory.
