Liverpool vs Aston Villa predictions

Liverpool returned to the Premier League summit with last Saturday's 2-1 success at home to Brighton and can make sure of staying there for another two weeks by defeating Aston Villa at Anfield.

A favourable schedule helped Liverpool's progress early in the season but there have been plenty of tricky tests since the October international break and the Reds have kept racking up victories.

However, slow starts have not been uncommon and the trend continued in Tuesday's Champions League clash at home to Leverkusen when a goalless first half gave way to a dominant second period as Slot's side ran out 4-0 winners.

Liverpool are playing with greater  patience than in recent years and might take a while to assert themselves against Aston Villa, who are superbly coached by master tactician Unai Emery.

There was an anomaly last weekend when Villa shipped four second-half goals in a 4-1 defeat at Tottenham, but the Midlands side can generally be relied on to be supremely well organised and have given plenty of examples of their effectiveness in the toughest of fixtures.

Last season Emery's outfit completed a league double over Arsenal and registered victories at home to Manchester City as well as away to Tottenham  and Chelsea.

Liverpool were the only fellow top-six side they failed to defeat but the Villans produced a storming finish in a 3-3 draw at Villa Park in May, when Jhon Duran came off the bench to score twice in the final ten minutes.

Villa are off to a reasonable start this term with 18 points on the board and, given their recent record in big games, they will have their backers at fairly long odds.

However, their visit to Merseyside comes at the end of a busy and rather unsuccessful spell featuring three successive defeats in three different competitions.

The run of losses started last Wednesday when a much-changed Villa side succumbed 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup.

Squad rotation was also risked for this week's 1-0 Champions League reverse away to Bruges, although first-team regulars Ezri Konsa, John McGinn, Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins were kept in the starting line up and their fitness levels will be tested as Villa prepare for a third big match in seven days.

Top-level European football was always likely to stretch the Villa squad and it is noticeable that disappointing Premier League draws against Manchester United and Bournemouth came at the end of Champions League weeks.

The trip to Liverpool is far tougher than either of those assignments and it seems likely to result in a fourth successive defeat.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa bet builder predictions

Liverpool to win
Liverpool have reeled off six straight home wins since their 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest and they should be too strong for Villa, who are reeling from three straight defeats.

Luis Diaz to score any time
In-form Colombian Luis Diaz was Liverpool's midweek hat-trick hero and he can get on the scoresheet this weekend.

Amadou Onana to be carded
Former Toffee Amadou Onana will get plenty of attention from the home crowd and his tough tackling style makes him a strong yellow card candidate.
