Liverpool vs Manchester United predictions
Manchester United held out for a 0-0 draw on their Premier League trip to Liverpool last season but the Red Devils had been thumped 7-0 and 4-0 in their previous two fixtures at Anfield.
And another heavy defeat looks likely as Liverpool are enjoying a fabulous season under Arne Slot while United endured a miserable end to 2024.
The Red Devils have lost five of their last six league matches as well as a 4-3 defeat at struggling Tottenham in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.
United's 2-0 defeat at Arsenal at the start of December was no real surprise but manager Ruben Amorim has subsequently overseen home losses to Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Newcastle as well as a 2-0 reverse at relegation-threatened Wolves.
Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte return from suspension to bolster the United midfield at Anfield but it is hard to see how Amorim's men can avoid another morale-denting defeat.
Liverpool have won ten of their last 11 home matches in all competitions and the exception was last month's 2-2 draw with Fulham, when the Reds had left-back Andy Robertson sent off in the 17th minute.
Slot has racked up 23 victories in 27 matches in all competitions during an extraordinary first season in England and one of his early successes was September's 3-0 league win at Old Trafford.
The gap between the north-west rivals has widened dramatically since that result and backing Liverpool to win a game featuring over 3.5 goals looks a solid bet.
The return of Fernandes, United's leading scorer in the league with a meagre tally of four goals, is a welcome boost for a side who have been beaten to nil in their last three outings.
But Liverpool's forwards had a productive festive period, hammering Tottenham 6-3 and West Ham 5-0 in their last two away games, either side of a 3-1 home win over Leicester.
The Reds have shown glimpses of defensive vulnerability, conceding 11 goals in six league matches before shutting out West Ham at the London Stadium.
However, top-class midfielders Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister should provide an excellent foundation for an in-form attacking unit inspired by Mohamed Salah.
The Egyptian winger has registered 30 goal contributions in 18 Premier League appearances this season while Manchester United have scored only 21 times in 19 matches.
That statistic demonstrated the gulf in class between the title favourites and their lowly visitors and it is likely to be reflected by the scoreline at Anfield.
Doubts over the futures of Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are concerning Liverpool supporters but, in the short term, Reds fans should relish another comprehensive victory over their struggling rivals.
