Ruben Amorim won his final three matches as Sporting manager by 5-1, 4-1 and 4-2 scorelines and Manchester United's new boss is aiming to deliver another comprehensive victory on his Premier League debut at Ipswich.

Amorim's arrival at United has been eagerly anticipated, especially after he inspired Sporting's 4-1 Champions League rout of Manchester City in his final home game in Lisbon.

Having steered the club to the Primeira Liga title last season, he won his first ten Portuguese league fixtures of 2024-25 but takes over a United side who have picked up only 15 points from 11 games.

The Red Devils' most convincing league wins were 3-0 victories against Southampton and Leicester so a trip to Ipswich offers the chance to complete a hat-trick of convincing successes against the promoted clubs.

A Premier League clash with Manchester United stirs up grim memories for supporters of Ipswich, who suffered a 9-0 defeat at Old Trafford in March 1995.

The Tractor Boys should be confident of avoiding a similar scoreline against United's current crop, who are averaging just 1.09 goals per game in the league.

However, Amorim's arrival may galvanise his side's underperforming attackers and backing the visitors to win a match featuring over 2.5 goals appeals at Portman Road.

While much of the focus is on United's fresh start after Erik ten Hag's troubled time at the club, Ipswich are aiming to build on their impressive 2-1 win at Tottenham before the international break.

Town had been 10-1 shots in north London but they earned their first victory of the campaign thanks to first-half goals from Sammie Szmodics, last season's Championship Golden Boot winner with Blackburn, and Liam Delap, who has struck six times in ten Premier League starts.

That result enhanced the reputation of Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna, a former United assistant manager who was linked with the top job at Old Trafford last summer.

McKenna's chances of causing another upset against his former employers may be hampered by injuries as he told the media on Friday that several players, including Manchester City loanee Kalvin Phillips, are "touch and go" for the fixture. 

Striker Delap has been an instant hit in the top flight but Ipswich have struggled defensively and their five defeats include 4-1 losses to champions City and West Ham and a 4-3 reverse at Brentford. 

But there could be teething problems as United switch to a back three, Amorim's preferred defensive formation, so the Red Devils may need to score at least twice to earn maximum points.

Interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy led the Red Devils to 5-2 and 3-0 wins over Leicester in the EFL Cup and the league and United's forwards should cause problems for another of the top flight's newcomers.
