Ipswich vs Brighton predictions

Phil Collins was enjoying his first number-one single when Ipswich last hosted Brighton in a top-flight contest in January 1983 and the Seagulls could be frustrated upon their long-awaited return to Portman Road.

Ipswich have just passed the halfway mark in their first Premier League season since 2001-02 and survival is still in their sights, especially after they took four points from their last two games against Chelsea and Fulham.

The Tractor Boys were happy to play without the ball in both of those matches, managing just 27 per cent possession in the 2-2 draw with Fulham and 24 per cent in the eyecatching 2-0 win over Chelsea.

Liam Delap, who scored from the spot in both of those games to take his league goal tally to eight, remains an obvious threat up top but tightening up at the back is also helping the Ipswich cause.

Their tally of 35 goals conceded, although not great, is the lowest in the bottom four and better than Brentford and West Ham's while they have recorded back-to-back clean sheets at home against Chelsea and Bristol Rovers.

With that in mind, they should be fancied to avoid defeat against a Brighton team light on personnel.

Seagulls down to bare bones

Key forward Joao Pedro is a doubt for the Seagulls, who are already missing Jack Hinshelwood, James Milner, Ferdi Kadioglu, Igor, Mats Wieffer and Diego Gomez among others.

Brighton cruised to a 4-0 win over Ipswich's rivals Norwich in the FA Cup third round last Saturday but they are without a win in their last eight games in the Premier League, last recording three points against Bournemouth in November.

They have been particularly underwhelming against the league's lesser lights, failing to beat any of the bottom four this term, and Ipswich defended well in a 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture at the Amex Stadium in September.

With ten stalemates to their name, Brighton have earned the reputation of Premier League draw specialists this season and it would be no surprise if it finishes all square in Suffolk.

But there is every chance Ipswich could get more from this game given how they performed against Chelsea in their last home league game and the fact that Brighton are not at full strength, so backing the Tractor Boys to avoid defeat on their own patch looks the wisest betting approach.
