Match preview
Not so long ago Fulham were breathing down Newcastle’s neck in the scrap for Premier League survival and this final-day clash at Craven Cottage was expected to have huge ramifications on relegation.
But while the Magpies have lost only three of their final 12 games to secure safety, the Cottagers have collected just six points in the same timeframe, resulting in their immediate return to the Championship.
Despite their indifferent form, Fulham are strong favourites to end a disappointing campaign on a high.
Scott Parker’s men held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Tuesday, but that still stretched their winless run to nine.
The relegated Londoners boast the worst home form in the division having claimed only ten points from 18 games, and they have netted just nine goals during that period.
Bobby Decordova-Reid is Fulham’s leading marksman with just seven goals - nobody else has more than four - and that lack of firepower makes them easy to oppose, even when taking into account Newcastle’s absences.
An injury to Callum Wilson is the biggest blow, but the Magpies scored three times in defeat to Manchester City and accounted for Sheffield United without the services of their top scorer.
French talisman Allain Saint-Maximin and Arsenal loanee Joe Willock, who has hit the net in each of Newcastle’s last six league games, are both are expected to feature despite limping off in Wednesday's 1-0 defeat of the Blades.
Newcastle’s last eight matches have seen them topple Leicester and West Ham, as well draw with Tottenham and Liverpool, and they look overpriced to avoid defeat against Championship-bound opposition at Craven Cottage.
Key stat
Fulham have won only two of their 18 home league games this term, with their victories coming against fellow relegated sides Sheffield United and West Brom.
