Everton vs Newcastle predictions

A Dwight McNeil brace lifted Everton to their first win of the Premier League season against Crystal Palace at Goodison Park last weekend and that should give the Toffees a sense of optimism going into their visit from an injury-hit Newcastle.

Sean Dyche's side had taken only one point from their opening five matches and home supporters must have been feeling the pressure once Marc Guehi had given Palace an early breakthrough last Saturday.

But Everton showed plenty of character to turn things around given their sluggish start to the season and there has been no issue with them finding the net in recent assignments.

They claimed a 1-1 draw at Leicester prior to their breakthrough 2-1 victory over Palace and before that they had let 2-0 leads slip in defeats to Bournemouth and Aston Villa.

With star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin fit and healthy, Everton have an outlet and they will fancy causing problems for a Newcastle side who have failed to keep a league clean sheet since their opening-day victory at home to struggling Southampton.

The Magpies are still being hit by a raft of injuries and there is an unsettled look about them defensively with towering Dutchman Sven Botman still sidelined.

Eddie Howe's side will be buoyed by their latest 1-1 draw at home to champions Manchester City, but away from St. James' Park there has been a persistent vulnerability about them.

Newcastle were convincingly beaten 3-1 at Fulham on their last away trip, while they needed two late wonder-strikes to turn a 1-0 deficit into victory at Wolves having also been held to a 1-1 draw by Bournemouth.

It means that both teams have scored in each of their last five league games and the trend is fancied to continue against Everton, who have been extremely leaky for a Dyche side usually complemented for their defensive steel.

The Toffees have conceded 15 goals in six league games – their only clean sheet in all competitions this term came at home to League Two outfit Doncaster in the EFL Cup – and it is a weakness Newcastle can exploit even in the absence of Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.

But the Magpies have won only six of their last 19 away league games and they are difficult to recommend as favourites at Goodison Park, where they were soundly beaten 3-0 last season.

So goals look the way to go. Five of Everton's six league matches this season have gone over 2.5 goals, with both teams scoring in their last four outings, while Newcastle have kept only one clean sheet in their last 19 away league fixtures.

Key stat

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals has been a winning bet in ten of Newcastle's last 13 away league matches.
