Crystal Palace vs Manchester United predictions

Things have been looking up for Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after a rare good week, but it might be unwise to get carried away with victories over Southampton and Barnsley.

It was a must-win contest at Southampton for Ten Hag last Saturday and while they got the job done with a convincing enough 3-0 victory, the Saints were the better team in the opening half and should have taken the lead from a Cameron Archer penalty.

Andre Onana saved that spot-kick which changed the complexion of the match and United built on that win by blowing Barnsley away in a 7-0 rout in the EFL Cup on Tuesday.

However, the Tykes are proving a leaky League One outfit and a tougher test awaits at Crystal Palace, who were 4-0 winners in this fixture towards the end of last season.

The Eagles have taken time to get going this season, failing to win any of their opening four league games, and are being undone by slow starts.

Oliver Glasner’s side have conceded the opening goal in all four league outings and they needed a Jean-Philippe Mateta penalty in stoppage time to rescue a point at home to Leicester last weekend.

Manchester United still have plenty to prove on their travels - the Red Devils have won only five of their last 15 away league games - so the match result markets are a tough play and getting on goals is a safer approach.

Palace have looked less assured at the back since Joachim Andersen’s move to Fulham and they also have their fair share of injuries to deal with in defence.

The south Londoners have conceded seven goals in four games - they still await a clean sheet - and United’s forwards should be full of belief having scored ten times in two outings.

But the Red Devils are not all of a sudden steely defensively themselves and in Eberechi Eze, Mateta, Eddie Nketiah and Ismaila Sarr, Palace have the attacking assets to bring those frailties to light.

Therefore, backing both teams to score & over 2.5 goals may be the best bet on offer in Saturday’s teatime kickoff, and Eze could get his name on the scoresheet.

The 26-year-old has taken the mantle as Palace’s star man following Michael Olise’s switch to Bayern Munich and he has been trigger-happy when in range in the Premier League this season, registering 18 shots in four appearances.

Only Manchester City phenomenon Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth have had more shots in the English top-flight than Eze, who has grabbed three goals in six games in all competitions.

The Palace hotshot closed out the last campaign with five goals in six Premier League outings and he looks overpriced to bolster this season's tally in what could be a gung-ho encounter.
