Brighton vs Arsenal predictions

Arsenal are rising to the challenge in their pursuit of Premier League leaders Liverpool and for a short time at least can narrow the gap to three points with a fourth straight victory at faltering Brighton.

The Gunners would have played two matches more than the pacesetting Reds after this trip to the Amex but an eight-game unbeaten run shows that they are not giving up on the unenviable task of hunting the Merseyside men down.

Mikel Arteta's side showed great character to come from a goal down to win 3-1 at Brentford on New Year's Day and that came hot on the heels of a 1-0 victory at home to Ipswich and a 5-1 rout of Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

That has been the perfect response to disappointing draws with Fulham and Everton and this looks the ideal time to be travelling to Brighton, whose early impressive work under manager Fabian Hurzeler has been undone by a seven-match winless run.

The latest 2-2 draw away at Aston Villa was hardly a disaster, but they have also been held to a point by Southampton, Leicester, West Ham and Brentford during their sticky patch.

A pair of 3-1 defeats against Fulham and Crystal Palace in December further highlights Brighton's drop-off and this looks a daunting task against an Arsenal outfit who are rallying to the cause with six wins in eight league games.

Despite having to deal with an injury to talisman Bukayo Saka, the Gunners are still scoring freely and they will be boosted by the return of Kai Havertz, who was missing through illness in Wednesday's 3-1 beating of Brentford.

Gabriel Jesus has rediscovered his goalscoring touch with six goals in his last four appearances and having the influential Martin Odegaard back fit and firing in midfield has been a big reason behind their bounce back to form.

Arsenal look determined to win and it is likely to be an entertaining encounter, with plenty of goalmouth action.

The Gunners have conceded in eight straight away league games and are less disciplined defensively than last season, but Brighton's run of only one clean sheet in 11 is of far more concern.

It means that both teams have scored in 15 of Brighton's 19 league games this season and that includes in defeats to Liverpool and Chelsea, as well as a 1-1 draw at the Emirates in August when Declan Rice's sending off early in the second half derailed the Gunners.

But with 11 men on the pitch, Arsenal should be able to claim a vital victory in what promises to be a free-flowing clash.

Key stat

Both sides have scored in five of the last seven meetings between Brighton and Arsenal.
