Brentford vs Arsenal predictions

The first Premier League fixture of 2025 sees Arsenal make the short trip to London rivals Brentford and the Gunners can start the year in style to keep themselves in the title conversation.

Mikel Arteta’s men have Liverpool’s nine-point buffer to eat into as they reach the halfway stage in the season but they are rallying to the cause, having put together an eight-game unbeaten run.

Draws with Fulham and Everton at the beginning of December did some damage to their title aspirations but they have responded with a 5-1 thrashing of Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park and a gritty 1-0 success at home to Ipswich, who have subsequently toppled Chelsea.

Brentford hold claim to the joint-best home record in the Premier League, with seven wins, one draw and one defeat from nine matches, but injuries are piling up and they have had a soft schedule.

Five of the Bees’ seven home league wins have come against teams currently in the bottom six and they were no match for high-flying Nottingham Forest last time out, suffering a 2-0 defeat.

It means that the Bees have won only one of their last five league matches and they have struggled to live with the Premier League’s elite – Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City have all beaten them this season.

Thomas Frank’s side were plucky in a goalless draw at Brighton on Friday but they lost the shot count 24-8 and had to rely on some slack finishing from the Seagulls.

Arsenal are unlikely to be so generous and Frank’s job has been made harder by the sheer number of first-team absentees he is having to deal with.

That said, there is hope that his Brentford side can cause Arsenal plenty of problems as they possess an extremely dangerous front three in Bryan Mbeumo, Kevin Schade and Yoane Wissa.

The Bees had scored in their opening eight home league games before that 2-0 loss to Forest and a tally of 26 goals scored during that period highlights their attacking threat.

Arsenal are also less watertight defensively on their travels and have been breached in nine of their last ten away games in all competitions, suggesting that goals should flow.

But Brentford have not kept a clean sheet at home and Arsenal’s array of attacking stars, even minus the influential Bukayo Saka, should carve out enough opportunities to claim three vital points in their pursuit of leaders Liverpool.

There have been 42 goals scored in Brentford’s nine home league games, an average of more than 4.5, and this fixture should bolster the trend with Arsenal likely to do most of the damage.

Key stat

Arsenal have conceded in each of their last seven Premier League away games.
