Brentford vs Tottenham predictions

It feels poetic that the ground where Ange Postecoglou made his first Premier League appearance as Tottenham manager might be the venue for his last.

That's not to say a defeat at Brentford will see him sacked. However, it could contribute, as the trip begins a big week, with Spurs defending a 1-0 advantage against Liverpool in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final before visiting Aston Villa in the FA Cup.

Another reverse would see Postecoglou become the first Tottenham boss since Ossie Ardiles to lose five straight league games, and he will almost certainly go if he matches the Argentinian's 1994 nadir of seven successive losses.

Cast your mind back to August 13, 2023. Tottenham were at the Gtech Community Stadium embarking on a new chapter under the Premier League's first Australian head coach and without the recently departed Harry Kane.

Their entertaining 2-2 draw demonstrated some of the anarchic qualities that would take them to the top of the table after a ten-game unbeaten start. That run was ended by a chaotic 4-1 home defeat to Chelsea and similar commotion has followed them since.

Thursday's 3-0 Europa League victory over Elfsborg provided respite but last Sunday's 2-1 home loss to Leicester was Tottenham's fourth in a row and their 13th in this season's Premier League.

The board were booed after the defeat to the Foxes and more of the same will only put Postecoglou further in the firing line.

Signing goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky early in the transfer window was a positive step to tackle the continued injury crisis and further new faces could arrive before the window closes on Monday.

That could provide fresh inspiration against Liverpool and Villa but not in time to take on Brentford.

The narrative around the game means it is easy to overlook the Bees, who won 2-1 at Crystal Palace last Sunday.

They have never beaten Spurs at home – drawing all three previous Gtech meetings – but have had a week to work on ways to repair their home record.

Thomas Frank's team were unbeaten in their first eight home league games of the season but have taken just a point from the last four.

Against visitors who have taken only four points from the last 30 available, Brentford can repay their fans and add to Ange's woes.

Key stat

Tottenham have lost eight of their last ten Premier League games.
