Aston Villa vs Manchester United predictions

In what is becoming common practice, it has been another week to forget for Manchester United.

Sunday saw the Red Devils humiliated by Tottenham as they fell to a 3-0 defeat – a flattering outcome given Spurs racked up 4.4 expected goals – while Thursday brought a disappointing 3-3 draw with Porto in the Europa League.

United threw away a two-goal lead in that European clash and needed a 91st-minute Harry Maguire strike to rescue a point and, potentially, Erik ten Hag's increasingly unstable job.

The Dutchman came under all sorts of pressure after the Tottenham defeat due to the nature of the performance and his questionable substitutions following a harsh Bruno Fernandes red card, which has since been overturned.

Ten Hag is quickly running out of excuses and he simply must start getting positive results, otherwise the 1-2 about him being the next Premier League manager to leave could become even shorter.

We have been here before, though, and the Dutchman is like a cat with nine lives.

Manchester United were in a similar state last term yet still managed to do the double over Aston Villa, so Ten Hag may actually be quietly optimistic ahead of his side's trip to Villa Park.

However, it seems as if the Red Devils manager is running out of chances and everything, bar a woeful historic record which has seen the Villans win just one of their last 25 home games against United, is pointing towards a Villa victory.

The day before United's struggle in Portugal, Villa enjoyed one of the best nights in their recent history as a Jhon Duran strike handed Unai Emery's men a 1-0 victory over German giants Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

High on confidence following that sensational success against a previously unbeaten side and with fresher legs than their visitors, the Villans could make a shade of odds-against look a huge price.

Villa's only loss this season came against title-chasing Arsenal and Emery's men have won six of their last seven matches. United have already suffered as many losses (three) this season as Villa have in their last 12 matches, suggesting it could be another day to forget for the Red Devils.

With Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers and Duran in red-hot form, Aston Villa have more than enough firepower to punish shaky United, who have an expected goals against figure of 11.04 this term – the fifth-worst in the Premier League at the start of the weekend and ahead of only the three promoted sides and Brentford.

Key stat

Since Unai Emery's arrival, only Manchester City (85), Liverpool (84) and Arsenal (81) have taken more points at home in the Premier League than Aston Villa's 74.

Aston Villa vs Manchester United bet builder predictions

Ollie Watkins to score or assist
Aston Villa's talisman has four goals and three assists in eight matches this term and should have a big impact against a shaky United backline.

Over 2.5 goals
Each of Aston Villa's last four Premier League games has featured over 2.5 goals, while United shipped three against Spurs last Sunday.

Lisandro Martinez to be carded
The feisty Argentinian has been booked in three of his last four appearances and could have a tough time against the energetic Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran.
