Arsenal vs Tottenham predictions

Styles make fights, according to the old boxing adage, so Wednesday's Premier League derby between Arsenal and Tottenham should be a fascinating contest.

Arsenal supporters have been frustrated by their side's lack of attacking verve and cutting edge up front in the absence of the injured Bukayo Saka.

Spurs fans, meanwhile, may be casting envious glances at an Arsenal defence who have conceded only 18 goals in 20 league matches this season.

A header from Gabriel earned Arsenal a 1-0 win over Spurs in the first north London derby of the campaign and backing the Gunners to claim another tight victory could be the best bet in the return fixture.

Rival managers Mikel Arteta and Ange Postecoglou are hampered by injuries and both teams' FA Cup third-round ties went to extra-time on Sunday.

The Gunners suffered a frustrating penalty-shootout defeat to ten-man Manchester United after missing several great chances, including a Martin Odegaard spot-kick in normal time.

Tottenham needed extra-time to clinch a 3-0 win at National League side Tamworth – just four days after they had beaten Premier League leaders Liverpool 1-0 in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie.

That kind of inconsistency has been a hallmark of Spurs under Postecoglou, although last month's chaotic 6-3 league defeat at home to Liverpool was something of an anomaly.

Tottenham's other ten losses in all competitions this term were all by a one-goal margin, including league defeats to Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle (twice) and highflying Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth.

Three of their five away losses were by a 1-0 scoreline and another low-scoring reverse could be on the cards when Tottenham's patched-up defence faces a misfiring Arsenal attacking unit.

Kai Havertz had a miserable game against United in the cup, missing a couple of sitters before his penalty was saved in the shootout.

Gabriel Jesus, who briefly found his shooting boots before Christmas, suffered a knee injury on Sunday and Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli and Raheem Sterling are hardly prolific goalscorers.

Arsenal struggled to create chances against the Red Devils until Diogo Dalot was sent off in the 61st minute and the Gunners' previous home game was a 2-0 EFL Cup semi-final first-leg loss to Newcastle.

Since Christmas they also made hard work of beating lowly Ipswich 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium and let slip a lead to draw 1-1 at Brighton, where Ethan Nwaneri – another injury absentee – scored a fine individual goal.

Key stat

Ten of Tottenham's 11 defeats in all competitions this season were by a one-goal margin.

Arsenal vs Tottenham team news

Arsenal
Jurrien Timber and Jorginho have been passed fit but Riccardo Calafiori is a doubt. Gabriel Jesus suffered a knee injury on Sunday and Bukayo Saka, Ben White, Ethan Nwaneri and Takehiro Tomiyasu are also out.

Tottenham
Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky should make his Premier League debut although Fraser Forster (illness) is likely to return to the squad. Richarlison is fit again but Timo Werner (hamstring) has joined Guglielmo Vicario, Ben Davies, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven, Rodrigo Bentancur and Wilson Odobert on the sidelines.

Probable teams

Arsenal (4-3-3): Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Tierney; Odegaard, Partey, Rice; Sterling, Havertz, Trossard
Subs: Martinelli, Jorginho, Merino, Lewis-Skelly, Kiwior, Zinchenko, Butler-Oyedeji

Tottenham (4-3-3): Kinsky; Porro, Dragusin, Gray, Spence; Bergvall, Sarr, Maddison; Kulusevski, Solanke, Son
Subs: Bissouma, Moore, Richarlison, Johnson, Olusesi, Lankshear, Reguilon

Arsenal vs Tottenham bet builder predictions

Under 3.5 goals
Only one of Arsenal's last eight home matches has featured over 3.5 goals and Tottenham's FA Cup tie at Tamworth was goalless after 90 minutes on Sunday.

Gabriel to have two or more shots
The Arsenal centre-back scored the winner at Tottenham in September and should get chances from set-pieces against a depleted Spurs defence.

James Maddison to be shown a card
The Spurs midfielder has been booked in his last two Premier League away games, also picking up two yellow cards in just 107 minutes of EFL Cup action this season.
