Arsenal vs Liverpool predictions

The suspension to star centre-back William Saliba has added further insult to injury for Arsenal ahead of their Premier League title showdown with Liverpool and it may leave the depleted Gunners there for the taking.

If injury to Martin Odegaard was not severe enough, Arsenal were already sweating on the fitness of Bukayo Saka before Saliba saw red in last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth.

It is an unfamiliar situation for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to be without the steely Saliba, who has missed only 11 top-flight games since making his Premier League debut in August 2022, and matters intensified when Riccardo Calafiori limped off in midweek’s Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Gunners have won only five of those 11 outings without Saliba, with their win rate dropping from 74 per cent to 45 per cent and goals conceded per game rising from 0.8 to 1.6, highlighting the cause for concern.

Even prior to Saliba’s 30th-minute dismissal against Bournemouth, Arsenal were yet to get a foothold in the game and there is evidently less attacking intent without Odegaard and Saka.

There were some signs of distress for Arsenal even before the defeat to the Cherries, with them requiring two injury-time goals to defeat Leicester 4-2 at home while they went a goal down against Southampton before sparking into life.

There will be a greater reliance on Kai Havertz to provide their attacking output but he is not an out-and-out striker, so this looks the perfect time for Liverpool to be heading to the Emirates.

The Reds have made a seamless transition from Jurgen Klopp to Arne Slot, and the Dutchman has steered them to the top of the Premier League table with seven wins from eight games.

A lot will come to light about Liverpool in the coming weeks as they’ve had a pretty soft Premier League schedule so far, but last Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea was another measured performance.

The Blues dominated possession but were limited to just two shots on target and a record of only three goals conceded in eight league games illustrates how well Liverpool have been defending.

Liverpool’s only blip this season came in a 1-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest in the middle of September but they have served up the perfect response, reeling off eight straight wins in all competitions.

Another victory at the Emirates would move them seven points clear of the Gunners and it may be the most likely scenario, as Arsenal look far less prepared for the challenge ahead.

Given his absentees, Arteta may opt for a structure that makes it difficult for Liverpool to play through them, which makes the draw a big runner.

However, Liverpool, blessed with attacking talent in abundance through Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah, still look the likely victors and are worth backing in the draw-no-bet market.
