Newcastle vs Tottenham predictions

This fixture has a history of producing goals and another end-to-end encounter could be in store when Newcastle welcome Tottenham to St James' Park on Sunday afternoon.

It has been a solid yet unspectacular start to the season for both sides, with the Magpies beating Southampton 1-0 when down to ten men in the first half before drawing 1-1 at Bournemouth in controversial fashion after the Cherries had a late goal chalked off for handball.

Eddie Howe's troops required penalties in midweek to get the better of Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup after the pair were locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, but they will be hoping that shootout success can give them a boost.

Newcastle haven't clicked into gear in the final third but if ever there was a fixture that was going to spark an attacking improvement, there are not many better than this one.

Seven of the last nine meetings between these sides have produced four or more goals. Five of those fixtures were on Tyneside, and in last season's encounters Tottenham won 4-1 at home before losing 4-0 on the road.

Goals are not hard to come by at St James' Park, with seven of the Magpies' last 11 Premier League home games seeing at least four, while Spurs' away assignments have also seen the net bulge several times.

Six of Tottenham’s last 11 top-flight road games have yielded four or more goals and it would be no surprise to see another attacking affair between two entertaining teams on Sunday.

Ange Postecoglou's side opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Leicester at the King Power Stadium before putting Everton to the sword in north London, running out 4-0 winners.

Spurs have had a combined 28 attempts on goal in their first two matches, ten of those on target and five ending up in the back of the net, and they really should have put more than one past the Foxes.

But Tottenham are still looking a little fragile at the back, despite keeping a clean sheet against the Toffees, as they have allowed 17 efforts against them and that weak backline could be exposed by Newcastle.

Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, James Maddison and Heung-Min Son look set to feature on Tyneside so the chance of goals looks high in what promises to be an enthralling encounter.
