Wales vs Turkey predictions

Turkey gave their vocal supporters plenty to shout about with a run to the quarter-finals at Euro 2024 and their positive year can continue with a victory in Wales to kick off their Nations League campaign.

A new era is beginning for Wales, who made a change in the summer by appointing Craig Bellamy as their new head coach.

Bellamy had a successful playing career for Wales, scoring 19 goals in 78 internationals, but never featured at a major tournament.

After Bellamy retired from playing, the Welsh team went through a golden era with a run to the semi-finals at Euro 2016 and qualification for Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.

But they missed out on a place at Euro 2024 and followed with dismal friendly results as they drew 0-0 with Gibraltar and lost 4-0 in Slovakia.

Bellamy's predecessor Robert Page was dismissed after the loss to Slovakia, although he could argue that he did a reasonable job in difficult circumstances.

The 50-year-old is the only person to have managed Wales at two major tournaments and his failed bid to steer them to Euro 2024 was significantly affected by the loss of Gareth Bale, who announced his retirement in January 2023.

Bellamy may be the next Welsh manager to discover what a tough job it has become in the post Bale-era. And his first selection is complicated by the absence of injured Leeds winger Dan James, who has been a key player in recent campaigns.

Wales no longer look like a team capable of mixing it with the top teams and they may struggle to cope with Turkey, who finished five points above them in Euro 2024 qualifying.

Turkey arrived at the Euros with modest expectations but soon built a reputation as a talented, energetic side with some outstanding young players.

There were signs of inexperience in the quarter-final when they gave up a 1-0 lead in a 2-1 loss to the Netherlands. However, head coach Vincenzo Montella finished the tournament with plenty to feel positive about, including the superb performances of precocious teenage attackers Kenan Yildiz and Arda Guler.

Exciting times lie ahead for Montella's side, who are 11-10 favourites to top their Nations League group and look well worth backing to make a winning start.
