Sunday's Nations League predictions
A disappointing Euro 2024 has been quickly forgotten by Italy, who have gone unbeaten in their opening five Nations League games to sit top of a difficult section, ahead of France, Belgium and Israel.
The Azzurri crashed out in the last 16 this summer due to a flat performance in a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland, but Luciano Spalletti is now getting a tune out of his side.
The former Napoli manager’s tactics were perhaps too contrasting to his predecessor Roberto Mancini’s for Italy to adapt to in time for the Euros, but it is all clicking now.
Their Nations League campaign began with a 3-1 victory in Paris and they will be feeling confident ahead of the reverse fixture after a 1-0 win in Belgium.
France, meanwhile, were held to a 0-0 draw by the section’s basement boys, Israel, on Thursday and they could falter against Italy, who would likely have a perfect record had Lorenzo Pellegrini not been sent off when the Azzurri were 2-0 up against Belgium last month, his dismissal leading to a 2-2 draw with the Red Devils.
With one game remaining, there is plenty to play for in Group B3. Austria are top on ten points - the same as second-placed Norway - but Slovenia know that a win in Vienna will see them leapfrog their hosts.
Knowing that, the usually cautious Matjaz Kek may opt for a more attacking approach at the Ernst Happel Stadium, which may increase Benjamin Sesko’s already decent chances of finding the net.
Sesko has impressed in the Champions League this term, scoring three goals in four matches for RB Leipzig, and he has been an even brighter star on the international stage, netting five of Slovenia’s six goals in the Nations League.
Austria have managed just two clean sheets in their last 12 matches and Sesko could continue his fine form against a leaky defence.
