Scotland vs Portugal predictions

Scotland and the Tartan Army arrived at Euro 2024 with hope in their hearts this summer but they have been put through the emotional mill since then.

Steve Clarke's men suffered a group-stage exit, losing 5-1 to tournament hosts Germany in the opening game of the tournament and conceding a 100th-minute goal in a 1-0 defeat to Hungary on matchday three.

Scotland's Nations League Group A1 campaign has also featured plenty of late drama, none of it raising the spirits of Scottish supporters.

In September they fought back from 2-0 down against Poland at Hampden Park but conceded an injury-time penalty to lose 3-2 before Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the 88th minute to secure a 2-1 win for Portugal.

Scotland's losing run continued with a 2-1 defeat in Croatia on Saturday, when VAR denied them a 95th-minute equaliser.

"On another night we would have got what we deserved," Clarke said after the Croatia game and Scotland's performance suggests that, back on home turf, they could trouble Portugal.

They have won only one of their last 15 internationals, an unconvincing 2-0 friendly victory over Gibraltar in June, but competed well in all three Nations League fixtures as well as the 1-1 draw with Switzerland at the Euros.

The Swiss went on to beat Italy in the last 16 before going out on penalties against England in the quarter-finals and Scotland, despite their injury problems, have not looked out of their depth against some strong opponents.

Portugal have won all three of their Group A1 matches but they trailed Scotland for almost 50 minutes after Scott McTominay's early opener in Lisbon.

Roberto Martinez's men have conceded in all three games and their star-studded attacking unit failed to shine at the Euros, where they lost 2-0 to Georgia in their final group fixture before goalless knockout ties against Slovenia and France.

Portugal lost 2-0 in a March friendly against Slovenia, their last away fixture before the underwhelming Euros campaign.

Scotland teenager Ben Doak impressed against Croatia while McTominay and striker Che Adams are flourishing in Serie A this season and, at the prices, they merit a bet to frustrate the visitors.
