Scotland vs Croatia predictions

Scotland are in desperate need of a win in order to aid their Nations League survival hopes and they can put up a bold showing against Croatia at Hampden Park on Friday evening.

Scotland's victory over Gibraltar in June is their only success in their last 16 internationals and, while a long sequence without a win can start to become a psychological burden, they have been far more competitive than recent results imply.

The Scots suffered defeat in each of their opening three Nations League matches against Poland, Portugal and Croatia but each loss was by a single goal and they had taken the lead in away trips against the Portuguese and the Croats.

Poland, meanwhile, needed a 97th-minute penalty to snatch a 3-2 victory at Hampden Park and Scotland’s latest goalless draw with Group A1 leaders Portugal shows that there is still plenty of fight being shown for under-pressure manager Steve Clarke.

That may be the only point of their Nations League A campaign, but fine margins are proving the difference between success and failure and they are capable of serving it up to Croatia.

The Blazers’ place in the Nations League quarter-finals would have virtually been assured had they not blown a 3-1 lead in Poland to draw 3-3 last time out.

While Croatia have excelled over the last decade - they finished runners-up to France at the 2018 World Cup before a third-placed finish in Qatar four years later - there is the sense that the golden days are coming to an end.

For all the talent and experience Croatia inherit, they failed to win any of three group-stage matches at Euro 2024 and that includes a frustrating 2-2 draw with tournament minnows Albania.

Zlatko Dalic’s side do most of their good work on home soil and their come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Scotland in Zagreb was achieved when their visitors were missing a raft of experienced players.

Scotland have been boosted by the return of Jack Hendry, John McGinn and Stuart Armstrong, however, and it will be a very different atmosphere for Croatia to deal with at Hampden Park.

With Poland in action in Portugal and missing talisman Robert Lewandowski through injury, a draw may well be enough for Croatia to seal a top-two finish while a point could also be enough to keep Clarke’s side in the hunt for third.

Key stat

Croatia have conceded the first goal in five of their last seven internationals.
