Northern Ireland vs Luxembourg predictions

Following a disappointing Euro 2024 qualifying campaign in which Northern Ireland picked up just nine of a potential 30 points – six of which came against San Marino – Michael O’Neill will be looking to make a strong start to the latest edition of the Nations League.

However, this is a competition that has not been kind to his side over the years, with the Green and White Army winning just one of their previous 16 matches in the Nations League, losing 11 times.

In contrast, Luxembourg have lost just one of their last seven Nations League matches – a 2-2 draw with Turkey was the standout result in that run – and may fancy their chances of pinching a point in Belfast.

A glance at recent form which shows three losses to nil in the Red Lions' last four games is a worry. However, those defeats have come against elite sides France and Belgium as well as Georgia, who made the last 16 at Euro 2024.

Jonny Evans’ retirement leaves a big hole for the Green and White Army to fill and while home advantage should help Northern Ireland avoid defeat, they may have to surrender a point to a Luxembourg side who have beaten Bosnia and drawn with Turkey, Slovakia and Iceland in recent away games.

Key stat

Luxembourg avoided defeat in their three 2022-23 Nations League away games.
